Dr. Benjamin Barankin is a Toronto dermatologist specializing in medical, surgical and cosmetic care of the skin.His undergraduate university training was in Life Sciences and Psychology at Queen’s University, followed by medical school at the University of Western Ontario and dermatology residency at the University of Alberta.Dr. Barankin is also a widely published author with more than 700 articles related to dermatology and he has gained international distinction as the author of 7 books on dermatology. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous medical journals and newspapers. He has served on the executive of the Canadian Dermatology Association, and in 2014, he was honored by this national association with the Young Dermatologists’ Volunteer Award.Dr. Barankin regularly educates dermatologists, family physicians, medical trainees, and the public on matters related to the skin. Cigarette smoking is the single biggest preventable cause of death and disability in developed co... more Cigarette smoking is the single biggest preventable cause of death and disability in developed countries and is a significant public health concern. While known to be strongly associated with a number of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases and cancers, smoking also leads to a variety of cutaneous manifestations. This article reviews the effects of cigarette smoking on the skin and its appendages. A literature review was based on a MEDLINE search (1966-2004) for English-language articles using the MeSH terms cutaneous, dermatology, tobacco, skin, and smoking. An additional search was subsequently undertaken for articles related to smoking and associated mucocutanous diseases, with the focus on pathogenesis and epidemiologic data. Articles presenting the highest level of evidence and latest reports were preferentially selected. An expert panel of 11 Canadian dermatologists, including an international clinical scientist, used the following modified Delphi process: 1) A systematic literature review for acne treatment, dry skin, irritation, depletion of ceramides in acne, and benefits of moisturizers and ceramide-containing moisturizers was conducted; 2) panel members gave their opinion on the resulting statements, taking into account their treatment practices; 3) a panel meeting was held during the 2011 Canadian Dermatology Update to determine final statements; 4) the panel reviewed the final document. CMN are pigmented lesions present at birth or arising shortly thereafter. 1 CMN are classified according to their largest estimated diameter in adulthood: small (<1.5 cm), intermediate (1.5-19.9 cm), and large (≥20 cm). 2 Large CMN comprise ≥5% of the body surface area in infants, children, and preadolescents. 3 Classic microscopic description of CMN includes nevus cells in the lower two thirds of the dermis, occasionally extending into the subcutis; between collagen bundles distributed as single cells or cells in single file or both; and the lower two thirds of the reticular dermis or subcutis associated with appendages, nerves, and vessels. 4 Large CMN usually have these classic microscopic findings of CMN, intermediate CMN may or may not show these features, and small CMN most often do not show these microscopic features. 5 Also, there is significant overlap in histologic features between congenital and acquired nevi. 2
