In particular, we present the example of the stains embedded into one of the most studied archaeological objects in history, the Shroud of Turin. We show for the first time that image processing of both old and recent photographs of the Shroud may lead some researchers to perceive inscriptions and patterns that do not actually exist, confirming that there is a narrow boundary between image enhancement and manipulation.

A number of scientific papers were still in progress at the time, and these were all ultimately completed and published in credible refereed scientific journals. Some members of the team were interested in continuing their Shroud research and in the mid-1980’s, an effort was made to create STURP 2. One of the prime experiments STURP 2 would suggest was radiocarbon dating of the cloth. However, due to a number of different reasons, this was not to be. STURP 2 was never formed and the eventual radiocarbon dating of the Shroud would be left to other researchers. 2 The 1988 Radiocarbon Dating

It can be studied according to the rigorous Scientific Method, and it is too bad that so many wild flights of fancy have destroyed the credibility of the studies. Maybe we can restore some science to the discussions." ShroudScience Group and the present paper are a first effort to realize Ray's hope.

Some are based on serious science while others show a complete lack of understanding of the Shroud image or its properties. In this paper, I will review the "proto-photography" theory proposed by Prof. Nicholas Allen of South Africa. This theory concludes that the raw materials to produce photography not only existed in medieval times, but that a brilliant medieval "photographer" actually used them to invent photography 500 years before the documented creation of the first photographic negative by Joseph Niepce in 1818. To his credit, Allen has actually achieved what he set out to accomplish. He has, without question, used medieval raw materials to create a faint but good quality photographic image on linen cloth. As I will show however, his own results provide the best eviden...

I suggested a number of possible applications and sited some examples that were already in place on the Shroud of Turin Website. In the last twelve months, the expansion of the Internet has been explosive, with nearly 70,000 new viewers logging on every day. 2 That totals over 25,000,000 new viewers in just one year! With the increase in viewers has come amazing advances in both hardware and software. Many of the "future applications" I mentioned last year have already become reality. In this paper, I will review the role communications played in earlier Shroud research and site examples of how the Internet and other new technologies have changed the way Shroud studies are being conducted today.
