The article deals with the complex issue of the interrelation of the elements of the linguistic t... more The article deals with the complex issue of the interrelation of the elements of the linguistic texture with the elements of sense produced thanks to the decoding of the graphic layer. The departure point for the argument will be the concept of conceptual blending, deriving from cognitive linguistics. This concept describes the blending of two semiotic spaces, here the iconic space and the symbolic space, to create a new emergent space, which escapes unequivocal interpretation, especially if a given text intensifies the role of its graphic form. The analysis of such an emergent space will be understood as a typographic analysis of glyphs, their interdependencies, patterns and, ultimately, their relations with the meaning decoded in a given language. The interpretative act will proceed according to poststructuralist premises, based mainly on the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, who applies the term dissemination to describe the radically ambivalent character of sense production, not limited to semanticism, but taking into consideration all aspects of the textual tissue (graphic, phonetic, syntactic etc.). To describe the specific interpretative state of a reader/translator, who, faced with the totality of an experimental literary work, cannot prioritise various possible ways of interpretation, the study applies * This article was originally published in Polish in Przekładaniec 2017, vol. 35, pp. 57-72. The Hypergeneric Spectrum of Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon in Polish Translation The study ... more The Hypergeneric Spectrum of Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon in Polish Translation The study deals with the issue of genre in translation with reference to the Polish rendition of Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Upon analysing the hypergeneric and heteroglottic aspect of the novel, by enumerating the possible classifications of the novel’s genre and facets of language variety, the study offers a new perspective on genre classification from the vantage point of Jacques Derrida’s philosophy, namely by the introduction of the term quasi-transcendental as the name of a superordinate genre, which could include not only Pynchon’s but also Derrida’s works. The article includes the analysis of Gravity’s Rainbow, a novel by Thomas Pynchon in Polish trans... more The article includes the analysis of Gravity’s Rainbow, a novel by Thomas Pynchon in Polish translation. The novel, written within the postmodern convention, has a complex structure which resists hasty interpretative appropriation thanks to the multiplicity of subplots and ambiguitive literary devices, posing a serious challenge to the translator. The analysis utilizes concepts from contemporary literary theory and philosophy, e.g., Derrida’s dissemination and misreading, Eco’s open work and epiphany as an epistemological metaphor, to point out that the poetics of Pynchon’s novel requires a special approach to its translation, taking into account its inherent indeterminacy. In the interpretative process the open structure of Pynchon’s work gives rise to the phenomenon which might be called semiophany i.e., one instance of interpretative revelation that a part of the textual tissue can be seminal for the interpretation of the novel. The article presents the prominent figure of the contemporary American writer, Thomas Ruggles Pyn... more The article presents the prominent figure of the contemporary American writer, Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, a leading representative of the postmodern literary convention. The study contains a brief introduction of his works, with a special focus on the canonical novel for the postmodern convention i.e. Gravity’s Rainbow. The study will also apply McHale’s concept of ‘ontological dominant,’ which aptly describes the shift from epistemological issues to existential ones occurring from modernist to postmodernist literature. Subsequently, the article discusses the main aspects of Pynchon’s literary works and e.g. the presumed mode of reading i.e. ‘creative paranoia,’ encyclopaedicity and the interpretatively inconclusive binarities. Then, two fragments from Gravity’s Rainbow in Polish translation are analyzed in terms of the preservation of the source text sense productive potential according to Venuti’s theory of ‘foreignization.’ Finally, the study offers conclusions related to the reason...

The article deals with the concept of dominant with regard to the translation process and various... more The article deals with the concept of dominant with regard to the translation process and various definitions of this term (e.g. the translative dominant as defined by Bednarczyk). Then the study presents the works by Thomas Pynchon, a leading postmodern American writer, stressing the possibility of applying a wide spectrum of translative dominants to his multifaceted fiction, which explores the aesthetic ambiguities within the postmodern literary convention. Finally, the article offers two main translative dominants as adequate for the analysis of Pynchon's works in translation i.e. the ontological dominant and the sacral dominant. The description of the ontological dominant draws heavily on McHale's understanding of this concept, while the discussion of the sacral dominant involves the possible analogy of approach to translation between texts within the postmodern convention such as Pynchon's and sacral texts e.g. the Bible.
