There are indications that the third-known eruption of the recurrent nova T CrB is imminent, and ... more There are indications that the third-known eruption of the recurrent nova T CrB is imminent, and multiwavelength observations prior to the eruption are important to characterize the system before it erupts. T CrB is known to display the SiO fundamental vibrational feature at 8 $\, \mu$m. When the anticipated eruption occurs, it is possible that the shock produced when the ejected material runs into the wind of the red giant in the system may be traced using SiO maser emission. We have used the 100 m Effelsberg Radio Telescope to search for 28SiO emission in the υ = 1, υ = 2, J = 1 → 0 transitions, at 43.122 GHz and 42.820 GHz, respectively, while the system is in quiescence. We find no evidence for such emission. We set stringent 3σ upper limits of 1.66 mJy on emission in the υ = 1, J = 1 → 0 transition, and 1.72 mJy in the υ = 2, J = 1 → 0 transition, respectively, for a noise bandwidth of 250 kHz. A 3D maser model has been used to perform an inverse problem on the light curves from three high-... more A 3D maser model has been used to perform an inverse problem on the light curves from three high-amplitude maser flares, selected on the basis of contemporaneous infra-red observations. Plots derived from the model recover the size of the maser cloud, and two parameters linked to saturation, from three observational properties of the light curve. Recovered sizes are consistent with independent interferometric measurements. Maser objects transition between weak and moderate saturation during a flare.

S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be intermediates in the evolution of oxygen- to carbon-rich AGB stars. The chemical compositions of their circumstellar envelopes are also intermediate but have not been studied in as much detail as their carbon- and oxygen-rich counterparts. W Aql is a nearby S-type star, with well-known circumstellar parameters, making it an ideal object for in-depth study of less common molecules. Aims. We aim to determine the abundances of AlCl and AlF from rotational lines, which have been observed for the first time towards an S-type AGB star. In combination with models based on PACS observations, we aim to update our chemical kinetics network based on these results. Methods. We analyse ALMA observations towards W Aql of AlCl in the ground and first two vibrationally excited states and AlF in the ground vibrational state. Evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars are known to shed their gaseous envelope into a large, du... more Evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars are known to shed their gaseous envelope into a large, dusty, molecule-rich circumstellar nebula which typically develops a high degree of structural complexity. Most of the large-scale, spatially correlated structures in the nebula are thought to originate from the interaction of the stellar wind with a companion. As part of the ATOMIUMlarge programme, we observed the M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Hydrae with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The morphology of the inner wind of R Hya, which has a known companion at ∼3500 au, was determined from maps of CO and SiO obtained at high angular resolution. A map of the CO emission reveals a multi-layered structure consisting of a large elliptical feature at an angular scale of ∼10″ that is oriented along the north–south axis. The nebular circumstellar environments of cool evolved stars are known to harbour a rich morpholo... more The nebular circumstellar environments of cool evolved stars are known to harbour a rich morphological complexity of gaseous structures on different length scales. A large part of these density structures are thought to be brought about by the interaction of the stellar wind with a close companion. The S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) starπ1Gruis, which has a known companion at ∼440 au and is thought to harbour a second, closer-by (< 10 au) companion, was observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array as part of the ATOMIUMLarge programme. In this work, the brightest CO, SiO, and HCN molecular line transitions are analysed. The continuum map shows two maxima, separated by 0.04″ (6 au). The CO data unambiguously reveal thatπ1Gru’s circumstellar environment harbours an inclined, radially outflowing, equatorial density enhancement. It contains a spiral structure at an angle of ∼38 ± 3° with the line-of-sight. The HCN emission in the inner wind reveals a clockwise...

We simulate maser flares by varying either the pump rate or the background level of radiation in ... more We simulate maser flares by varying either the pump rate or the background level of radiation in a 3D model of a maser cloud. We investigate the effect of different cloud shapes, saturation levels, and viewpoints. Results are considered for clouds with both uniform and internally variable unsaturated inversion. Pumping and background variations are represented by several different driving functions, some of which are light curves drawn from observations. We summarize the pumping variability results in terms of three observable parameters: the maximum flux density achieved, a variability index, and duty cycle. We demonstrate typical ranges of the flux density that may result from viewing an aspherical object from random viewpoints. The best object for a flare is a prolate cloud, viewed close to its long axis and driven from unsaturated conditions to at least modest saturation. As a single-dish instrument, TNRT is a perfect tool to explore time domain astronomy with its agile observing systems and flexible operation. Due to its ideal geographical location, TNRT will significantly enhance Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) arrays, such as East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN), Australia Long Baseline Array (LBA), European VLBI Network (EVN), in particular via providing a unique coverage of the sky resulting in a better complete "uv" coverage, improving synthesized-beam and imaging quality with reducing side-lobes. This document highlights key science topics achievable with TNRT in single-dish mode and in collaboration with VLBI arrays.
