Language Planning In Pre-Colonial Kenya

Language planning has been looked at historically as a language problem phenomenon that arose whe... more Language planning has been looked at historically as a language problem phenomenon that arose when Third World countries began to gain independence from their European colonial masters. This paper argues that this kind of observation is faulty for Kenya, like many other Third World Countries, for she had language problems even before the advent of European colonial masters and so continuously planned her languages over history. This paper uses the social psychological theory by Lambert and Gardner to discuss what it perceives to be language planning in pre-colonial Kenya by outlining the linguistic roles that were assigned the languages in use in the country then in education, religious, political and even in social domains. In all the known historical epochs of the geo-political entity that is now called Kenya there appeared some kind of language planning – hence the conclusion that there was language planning in pre-colonial Kenya.

Linguistic diversity like the one obtaining in Kenya poses lots of socio-political, economic and ... more Linguistic diversity like the one obtaining in Kenya poses lots of socio-political, economic and educational challenges to concerned nations and so this forces them to have language plans with relevant language policies. Due to these challenges, the concerned nations try to look for ways and means to solve the problems to do with languages for national cohesion, languages for international cooperation, and languages to be used to access education, science and technology so as to remain relevant nationally and internationally. Present day Kenya has tried to achieve this relevance throughout her history with the climax being her most cherished 2010 constitutions. Even with this kind of constitution and given the write-ups in the same about its implementations, some questions come to mind; How long will it take to implement this constitution?, How much of the political will does this 2010 Kenyan constitution have?, and, Given the current obtaining situation, what differences in practice should Kenyans expect of the new constitution? The thesis of this paper is that of the metaphorical new wine in an old skin bottle.

This paper aims at analyzing the Swahili novel in the quest to show that the definition of the in... more This paper aims at analyzing the Swahili novel in the quest to show that the definition of the institution of marriage has changed and so there is need to redefine it. The paper seeks to explore the themes of marriage and religion in the last two decades. In our discussion, we base our examples on two novels; Paradiso (2005) and Kala Tufaha (2007). The aim of the paper is to show that marriage is a very vital organ of society and due to its varied interpretations occasioned by social-cultural and religious interpretations not forgetting changes brought about by globalization and technology, we assert that the effects to this institution are enormous. Marriage is key to societal existence and any change to it affects and threatens its existence and indeed the rest of humanity. It is with this understanding that we cannot separate the work of fiction and realities in this institution. Thus, the thesis of this paper is that we cannot interpret meaning in creative works independent of societal context in terms of time and place. In this paper the theory of New Historicism which recognizes historical contextuality is used.

Desk Graffiti Cohesion Strategies in the University of Nairobi Libraries

The paper argues that although many studies have been undertaken on graffiti at various universities, most of them have focused on toilet graffiti and on non-cohesive strategies and so there is need to turn to library desk graffiti as well and its cohesion styles. Although the study also notes that other cohesion types are present in the University of Nairobi graffiti data, it focuses only on lexical cohesion which seems to be the most salient and pronounced. Further, few studies on graffiti have focused on cohesion that involves multiple writers of a text and the challenges of establishing a reference process and communication of meaning and hanging together of elements in a text. This study reveals a heavy presence of lexical cohesion with all the types of lexical cohesion viz reiteration that subsumes, repetition, synonymy, and hyponymy and collocation that subsumes antonymy. ...

This study paper concludes that taboo words and their euphemized versions on body effluvia in Kikuyu provoke different responses among the Kikuyu language speakers. Using Politeness theory, the paper is significant in that it’s findings is of great importance to parents, teachers, court interpreters, media practitioners, counselors and sex educators using Kikuyu language. Data for the study was obtained from archival records, the internet and through interviews.

Kenya is a multilingual nation with over 40 ethnic languages, many foreign languages, and two cod... more Kenya is a multilingual nation with over 40 ethnic languages, many foreign languages, and two codes whose classification is not yet clear. The two codes are called Sheng and Engsh and are respectively language varieties of the slum and affluent dwelling places in Kenyan urban centres – especially in Nairobi. The objective of the present paper is to locate the place of Sheng and Engsh on the Kenyan linguistic scene by finding out what Kenyans feel the two codes are as instruments of communication. Data for the paper was collected by use of questionnaire, interview schedules, participant observation and archival records. The theory used in this paper is Social Identity as developed by Tajfel ( 1970). The conclusion that the present paper gives is that Engsh is but a variety of Sheng and that Sheng can no longer be taken for granted on the Kenyan linguistic scene. The paper recommends Sheng’s proper recognition and planning in Kenya.

DOI: 10.21276/sjahss.2018.6.2.7 Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the sounds that o... more DOI: 10.21276/sjahss.2018.6.2.7 Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the sounds that occur in Olutura so as to develop a phonetic inventory and to show how these sounds function in this dialect. A purposive sampling technique was used to identify native Olutura speakers and to categorize the data into the required categories for analysis. The study identifies each vowel and consonant sound that occurs in Olutura and discusses their role in its phonology. Examples of words in which these sounds occur are given in order to show their functions in the overall phonology and phonotactics of Olutura. From the data analysis, Olutura has a 5V system and a total of 52 sounds. The discussion reveals that Olutura prenasalizes sounds which do not primarily occur in its phonetic inventory, an occurrence that results in sounds with secondary articulation.
