Adviye Ayça Ünlüer received her Bachelor’s Degree in the Communication Design Program, Art and Design Faculty, Yildiz Technical University (YTU). She has completed her M.A. thesis on sound implementations in touch surfaces, and PhD thesis on new methods in gestural interface design education, in the Interactive Media Design Program in YTU, where she also works as a lecturer. She gives courses on concept development, design ergonomics, data visualization, typographic animation, icon design and multimedia projects in YTU and İstanbul Bilgi University. Her current interests are natural user interfaces, creative thinking.

Interaction in Motion with Mobile Projectors

Emerging research and growing use of mobile projectors reveal a need for better understanding of ... more Emerging research and growing use of mobile projectors reveal a need for better understanding of how to design interaction with such devices. This paper examines key aspects affecting the use of mobile projectors during motion. With the help of two prototypes we explore visibility issues of mobile projectors, in particular how surface colors and geometry affect the visibility of projected information. We then consider the choice of placement of information in the human field of view in the context of peripersonal and extrapersonal spaces. Finally, we raise the issue of body mount location and design implications of long-term use of this type of pervasive display. The paper presents two design explorations using projected displays to address projection on outdoor regular surfaces (snow) and projection on indoor irregular surfaces (indoor and outdoor), in the form of useable prototypes presenting map navigation. Use of the prototypes was explored in various contexts, leading to insights into the limitations and possibilities of such displays. These insights are presented in a set of design considerations intended to inform designers of future mobile projector applications.

One of the best ways we have found to assist students in their creative efforts is to encourage them to draw on cultural inspiration in the production of design ideas. We have employed this method since 2002, conducting "re-reading" exercises in two different cultural cases.

Cooperative photography redefines some fundamental notions of the photographic process by using m... more Cooperative photography redefines some fundamental notions of the photographic process by using mobile devices to synchronously coordinate multiple parties in a collaborative image capturing task. Using wireless communication and geo-location technologies, the photographer takes on a support role as content enabler rather than as the content creator, opening up creative possibilities. However, unreliable wireless networks and misunderstandings between users can make the coordination challenging and lead to a premature termination of the task. We present the evolution of the iterative design process we used to find a suitable set of interactions to encourage users to complete cooperative photography tasks. We report on our design motivations and their associated user studies, which suggest that user experiences dealing with higher level user behavior rather than lower level system awareness may be central in facilitating the successful completion of cooperative photography tasks.

While colourblindness is a disability that does not prevent those suffering from it from living f... more While colourblindness is a disability that does not prevent those suffering from it from living fruitful lives, it does cause difficulties in everyday life situations such as buying clothes. Users suffering from colourblindness may be helped by designing devices that integrate well with their daily routines. This paper introduces ChromaGlove, a wearable device that converts colour input into haptic output thus enhancing the colour-sensing ability of the user. The device uses variable pulse widths on vibration motor to communicate differences in hue. Data is obtained through an illuminated colour sensor placed on the palm. In the future, we plan to conduct studies that will show how well a haptic glove can be integrated in everyday actions.

It is a known fact that there is a conflict between what users expect and what user interface designers create in the field of medical informatics along with other fields of interface design. Objectives. The objective of the study is to suggest, from the 'design art' perspective, a method for improving the usability of an electronic medical record (EMR) interface. The suggestion is based on the hypothesis that the user interface of an EMR should be iconographic. Method. The proposed three-step method consists of a questionnaire survey on how hospital users perceive concepts/terms that are going to be used in the EMR user interface. Then icons associated with the terms are designed by a designer, following a guideline which is prepared according to the results of the first questionnaire. Finally the icons are asked back to the target group for proof. A case study was conducted with 64 medical staff and 30 professional designers for the first questionnaire, and with 30 medical staff for the second. Results. In the second questionnaire 7.53 icons out of 10 were matched correctly with a standard deviation of 0.98. Also, all icons except three were matched correctly in at least 83.3% of the forms. The proposed new method differs from the majority of previous studies which are based on user requirements by leaning on user experiments instead. The study demonstrated that the user interface of EMRs should be designed according to a guideline that results from a survey on users' experiences on metaphoric perception of the terms.

Cooperative photography allows two collocated users to collaborate in an image capture activity w... more Cooperative photography allows two collocated users to collaborate in an image capture activity where one user acts as a photographer and the other acts as the subject. Prior work in digital photography focused on the sharing of photographic content rather than on the image capturing process itself even though the latter is, by nature, a collocated collaborative task. However, it may be challenging for the collaborating parties to attain the necessary degree of synchronized coordination in the image capturing process since they would need to establish visual contact but may not even recognize each other. An exploratory study based on Yousies, a prototype of the cooperative photography technology, revealed behavioral patterns in the user experiences with respect to usage strategy, patience, and motivating factors that can be applied to the interface design of such collocated collaborative applications.

The synthetic growth is obtained through the assembly of identical blocks performed by two competing users. Each block type gives rise to different morphologies during each assembly session depending on the user and the environment that is augmented through projection on the synthetic structure and around it. The digitally augmented tangible interface is evaluated by professionals and students in interaction design. We introduce the concept of Emergent Interfaces (EI), which proposes harnessing non-determinism, temporal design, and self-organization. This work could contribute to organic user interfaces and morphogenetic engineering.

Natural User Interface (NUI) is a contemporary concept in Interactive Media Design that refers to... more Natural User Interface (NUI) is a contemporary concept in Interactive Media Design that refers to interfaces that let users interact with devices through the use of everyday actions and gestures, which differentiates it from standard a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Learning to design NUIs requires exploring a variety of subjects and technologies as well as embracing user-centered design principles. However, this alone is not enough for innovation within NUI design. One must be able to imagine technologies not yet developed. Our central observation, which forms the basis of this paper, is that students that are used to working with more stereotypical technologies of GUIs typically have a hard time adapting to such a large and flexible field.

The purpose of the research reported is to argue that “formal” design solutions of past cultures ... more The purpose of the research reported is to argue that “formal” design solutions of past cultures can generate innovative ideas in interactive media design. The authors ask how a traditional art in which body motion is used, namely Turkish Islamic calligraphy ---Khatt--- can help create innovative solutions for digital interaction design. Taking inspiration from Khatt, the authors have developed a project with the aim of allowing an audience with no prior calligraphy background to experience the performance process of calligraphy by reproducing it themselves. By creating a performance interface that provides predictability components, the authors have correlated the visual compositions with sound.
