Neue Modelle für das Leben in ländlichen Regionen, die durch digitale Anwendungen ermöglicht werden, sind jedoch schon deutlich länger im Einsatz. Es gibt Initiativen, die die Mobilität der Landbevölkerung durch Carsharing-Apps verbessern, andere, die mit Lieferprogrammen die Versorgung organisieren und damit zur Vernetzung des Personen-und Güterverkehrs beitragen sowie Transportketten und Nahversorgung optimieren wollen. Über "Dorf-Apps" werden verschiedene Formen der Nachbarschaftshilfe organisiert und neue Kommunikationswege ausprobiert. In Dörfern und ländlichen Kleinstädten werden sogar co-working spaces mit Büroausstattung und Breitbandanschlüssen eingerichtet, um ,kreative Köpfe' zusammenzubringen, Wege zu minimieren und neue Geschäftsideen zu unterstützen. Digital tools are being used and developed to address existing challenges in rural areas such as local communication, healthcare or mobility. Against the background of a conceptual framework of social and digital innovations from a process perspective, this paper asks how the processes and dynamics of digitally supported social innovations in rural areas can be understood and described. By analysing five villages in Germany, we show that the digital initiatives – despite their different contexts, contents and driving actors – develop over three phases: an inspiration phase, an emergence phase and a consolidation phase. ABSTRACT Smaller towns in rural regions are important anchors for regional development, but they ... more ABSTRACT Smaller towns in rural regions are important anchors for regional development, but they are not usually considered particularly innovative and open to new ideas. This paper asks how the network of small and medium-sized towns, Cittaslow, could establish slowing down as something new in local development. Against the theoretical background of sociological innovation research, an analytical framework of social innovation is elaborated to analyse Cittaslow using four case studies: two German and two Italian towns. Based on fieldwork in the four towns, this paper shows that discourse and communication on slowing down, local projects labelled as slow and new cooperation structures go hand in hand. This leads to the conclusion that new ways of local development need a communicative umbrella under which projects and stakeholders come together. The paper furthermore demonstrates that the analytical framework, with its triad of semantics, pragmatics and grammar, is extremely helpful for analysing spatial development and has the potential to be adapted as a tool for policy strategies.
einer innovativen Idee aus der Ernährung in die Stadtentwicklung Wenn soziale Innovationen die Ri... more einer innovativen Idee aus der Ernährung in die Stadtentwicklung Wenn soziale Innovationen die Richtung des gesellschaftlichen Wandels verändern (Zapf 1989) und soziale Beschleunigung ein wesentliches Kennzeichen der modernen Gesellschaft ist (Rosa 2005), dann kann die Idee der Entschleunigung, wie sie von Slow Food seit den 1980er-Jahren propagiert wird, als der Beginn einer sozialen Innovation betrachtet werden (Dumitru et al. 2016, S. 8). Im Feld der Ernährung ist es Slow Food gelungen, neue Arten des Wissens und Handelns sowie neue Beziehungen zwischen Konsument*innen und Produzent*innen zu etablieren. Dabei hat sich die Grundidee des slow inzwischen auch auf andere gesellschaftliche Teilbereiche ausgebreitet. 1 Konkret geht es Slow Food um eine Entschleunigung der Herstellung und des Konsums von Lebensmitteln und gleichzeitig um eine Rückbesinnung auf lokale Produkte und Verfahren. Mit dem Ziel des Erhalts von Vielfalt werden jene Lebensmittel(-hersteller) gefördert, die den Bedingungen eines globalisierten und schnellen Marktes ohne Unterstützung nicht standhalten könnten. Dabei handelt es sich meist um Produkte, deren Herstellung sehr zeitaufwendig ist und die nur in vergleichsweise geringen Mengen produziert werden. Gleichzeitig propagiert Slow Food das gemeinsame Essen als wesentliches Element sozialen Zusammenhalts und forderte von Beginn an ein "Recht auf Genuss". Die Ideale von Slow Food auf die Stadtentwicklung anzuwenden, ist das Anliegen der 1999 in Italien gegründeten Internationalen Vereinigung der lebenswerten Städte-Cittaslow. Inzwischen gehören über 230 Klein-und Mittelstädte in 30 Ländern der Vereinigung an. Diese stellen sich bewusst gegen den vermeintlich allgegenwärtigen Trend der Beschleunigung, indem sie ihre lokalen Besonderheiten, Produkte, Traditionen und stadträumlichen Qualitäten mit dem Ziel einer erhöhten Lebensqualität für Bewohner*innen und Gäste fördern.

Dazu werden im Artikel am Beispiel des Dorfes Dreis-Brück in Rheinland-Pfalz und seiner Dorfapp die unterschiedlichen Funktionen der Kneipe systematisiert und mit den Möglichkeiten der Dorfapp verglichen. Current debates on smart villages refer to both digitalization and social innovation but still in a rather unsystematic way. The paper seeks to think together digitalization and social innovation in rural areas more systemically and proposes to conceptually connect them with the help of sensitizing concepts, which are developed out of debates on social and digital social innovation. Digital social innovation (DSI) is commonly associated with cities. However, DSI is not limited t... more Digital social innovation (DSI) is commonly associated with cities. However, DSI is not limited to urban space. In rural areas, it is the inhabitants themselves who start and push digitalization projects, and collaborate with professional actors from the outside. These innovators see digitalization as a chance to solve rural problems such as scarce mobility, declining community interactions, demographic change, or urban-rural digital divide. In consequence, DSI such as smart community centers, digitally managed car-sharing, or community apps also emerge in rural areas. The article seeks to better understand the different actors responsible for the rural digitalization processes. In dem lesenswerten Buch nehmen die Autor_innen unterschiedliche Einzelphänomene von smartem Urbanismus über alternatives Mapping bis hin zu großstädtischen Smart-City-Konzepten in den Blick. Während einerseits vor dem Einfluss dominanter IT-Unternehmen gewarnt wird, werden andererseits die Möglichkeiten alternativer Konzepte von Digitalisierung für Stadtgesellschaften aufgezeigt. Über allem steht dabei die Forderung nach einer gesellschaftlichen Debatte zur zukünftigen Gestaltung von Stadt, die technische wie soziale Aspekte gleichermaßen berücksichtigt.
Cittaslow-Germany: where small cities represent themselves. In 1999 the International Association... more Cittaslow-Germany: where small cities represent themselves. In 1999 the International Association of Livable Cities, “Cittaslow: Rete internazionale delle citta del buon vivere”, was founded in Italy. To date, there are 182 member cities in 28 countries around the world, all of them smaller cities of less than 50,000 inhabitants. Twelve German cities are now members in the network. Based on an examination of the member cities of Cittaslow Germany, insight was gained into the system of requirements for excellence that is binding for Cittaslow cities, into its implementation in participating cities as well as into the viability and transferability of the overall concept. Small cities are ideally equipped to achieve an orientation towards a comprehensive sustainability approach, while in the process emphasizing categories of quality over quantity. These cities assume important roles as anchor points for regional development. Not only do they provide technological as well as social infrastructure, they also carry out private supply services for rural, often sparsely populated areas. At stake is more than just the preservation of quantifiable standards of living, but rather the overall improvement of the quality of life. As explained in the article, Cittaslow provides new stimuli, against the background of debates on shrinking processes, for further reflection on the functions and viability of small cities. At the same time Cittaslow became a brand standing for high quality of life in smaller cities.

As explained in the article, Cittaslow provides new stimuli, against the background of debates on shrinking processes, for further reflection on the functions and viability of small cities. At the same time Cittaslow became a brand standing for high quality of life in smaller cities.
