However facts show poor utilization of research into practice. This article focuses on assessment of academic research produced by highly qualified academicians working in universities in Sindh offering degrees in field of Environmental Sciences and Environmental Engineering. The article presents a methodology for assessment of academic research utilization for national development based on various criteria including purpose of research, funding bodies of research, relevancy of research with environmental issues, development mode of research, end users of research, mediator source for research utilization and intellectual property rights for research. This research is based on analysis of semi-structured interviews by using case study approach. Findings show that researchers have produced and published papers at larger number but very few of academic research have been utilized for national development. Academic research has been utilized by different national & international organizations (EPA, IUCN, WWF, SIDA, KDA). The research is utilized in the form of PhD thesis reports and other project reports funded by HEC, Universities and other national and international organizations. The outcomes of research utilization are either in form of new developed processes, services or policy guidelines under protection of copyrights. The findings also revealed cooperation of academicians with other stakeholders. However, none of the research has been utilized in the development of new Product or new technology under protection of industrial designs or patents.

Deans, faculty members and administrators of five different business schools in Hyderabad, Pakistan participated in this study. Responses of the participants are transcribed into verbatim reports and description of findings is structured in SWOT analysis format. Findings show sixteen different factors, comprising of four strengths, seven weaknesses, three opportunities, and two threats. There are more number of weaknesses of business schools to develop MBA students. However, business schools have some strengths and opportunities which they may utilize and improve. Radical changes would strive from the higher education authority. Conceptual framework presented in this study recommends that higher education authority may lead the change, cooperate between business schools and stakeholders, and support business schools to develop future managers and leaders through MBA programs.

Bridging Academic Inventors—TTO Managers Schism: The Lean Canvas for Invention
Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering, 2019

This tool is to educate academic inventors for incorporating the integral pre-commercialization components such as involvement of stakeholders, patent literature and market review in research proposals. This information has the potential to improve quality of invention disclosures to TTO and to increase chances of commercialization. This paper through interviews explores challenges (Cn) of TTO professionals and proposes solutions (Sn). As inventions disclosed, TTO managers initiate a technology transfer process and explore for patentability and market. If such aspects are considered by academic inventors, at the earlier stage of research process, chances of commercialization strengthen. The Cn and Sn are then adopted to develop an educational tool—LCI, to bridge the knowledge schism and improve the quality of invention disclosures. Cn and Sn are clustered with respect to five components and six sub-components, each with respective checklist required for writing a research proposal for invention. Evaluation of LCI by TTO at the University of Utah for “Acceptability”, “Usability” and “Guidance” is given. Feedback from TTO directors, TTO managers and academic inventors helped in development of a pre-commercialization research development tool—LCI. Based on findings and analyses, this paper validates the utility of the LCI as guidance for academic inventors to improve alignment of inventions with the technology transfer process.

The status is identified by analyzing enrolment of the postgraduate and comparing it with rate of their degree completion. In addition, the paper also discusses their characteristics which lead them towards the degree completion. For this paper, enrolment of the postgraduate students at the master level is compared with the degree completion rate of 2008 academic session only. The result shows the obvious difference between enrolment and rate of the degree completion. In total 417 postgraduate students were enrolled in 2008 session, however, only 60 (14%) of students have completed their postgraduate degrees. Those who have completed their degrees, with respect to universities 6% students belong to US (University of Sindh), 22% belong to MUET (Mehran University of Engineering & Technology) and 8% st...

Evaluation of faculty members' performance in terms of their primary responsibilities is difficul... more Evaluation of faculty members' performance in terms of their primary responsibilities is difficult, particularly when the contribution of faculty members is self-directed and uncoordinated. The model of scorecard is derived from the corporate sector, in which an organization identifies the key factors which are co-related with academia's mission. These factors are aligned then in accordance with the strategic importance, and every employee is set to evaluate as per the criteria of these factors. The process to correlate the principle responsibilities of faculty members with the University's mission has not previously been described. Thus, in this paper, the idea of scorecard has been applied to the academic environment, where key faculty performance competencies: Teaching competence, Research competence, and Service competence are set to evaluate in the perspective of the mission of academia. This study possesses qualitative nature, conducted through secondary data collection, including Job Descriptions, Teacher Evaluation Form, Higher Education Commission's Quality Assurance Manual, and other related documents. This scorecard has introduced a mechanism, which can evaluate the faculty members' performance in terms of their primary responsibilities in raw score. Using this scorecard, the competency of faculty members in their teaching, research, and service will separately be measured, which can reflect a clear picture of faculty member's performance in each of his/her primary responsibility and total score can determine when the score obtained against each of the responsibility will be accumulated. This scorecard is given name as, "Faculty Performance Indicator Score Card (FPISC)" that can be used to separately determine the strengthened and weak area of faculty members' performance in term of their primary responsibilities (Teaching, Research, and Service) in academia, which can certainly be helpful for Institute/Department, University to deliver the competency and productivity backed by the mission of academia.
