As a result of plans to relocate the Indonesian capital city to East Kalimantan province, Kaliman... more As a result of plans to relocate the Indonesian capital city to East Kalimantan province, Kalimantan is expected to develop rapidly and the surrounding regencies and provinces will become food support areas for the new capital. However, the vulnerability of food farming in Kalimantan is a concern that must be addressed to ensure food security. This study aims to assess the vulnerability of food farming at the regency level of the island of Kalimantan, to assess the determinant factors of the food farming vulnerability and to compose adaptation measures that can reduce vulnerability. Socio economic, climate, water and land data are sorted and analyzed to represent the level of sensitivity and exposure index (SEI) and adaptive capacity index (ACI). Locations with 'High' and 'Very High' levels of farming vulnerability become interview sites with a total of 150 respondents. The results of the interviews strengthen the results of the vulnerability analysis which helps to determine the condition of farmers and food farming in vulnerable locations. The results indicated 'Very High' and 'High' level of vulnerability in 14 regencies/cities. Floods are climate-related disasters that most often affect farmers surveyed (46%), followed by droughts (30%) and pest attacks (24%) with significant impacts (49%). The identification of the determinant factors becomes the basis for adaptive measures to support decision-makers, local practitioners, and farmers by highlighting local challenges and proposing local-specific adaptation strategies.

SIPTS could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and draw water to agricultural lands through supplementary irrigation. The objectives of research are to design a SIPTS for drip irrigation and to calculate the irrigation efficiency of SIPTS and GHG emission reduction. The results of the study indicate that the use of SIPTS could save fuel consumption from 70 to 14 L ha−1 season−1, resulting in a savings of 400%. Furthermore, the use of SIPTS could reduce GHG emissions originating from the use of hydrocarbon materials from 0.176 to 0.035 t of CO2 which is more environmentally friendly. The study was conducted in West Java province which has monsoon rainfall pattern and the province of West Sumatra with Equatorial rainfall pattern. Phase of research conducted through the following steps: (i) analysis of the correlation between ENSO and IOD with rainfall conducted to find the relationship between ENSO and IOD with rainfall in the period from December to February, March to May, June to August, and September-November, (ii) delineation Region Affected by ENSO and IOD, (iii) Sensitivity Analysis and Dynamics cropping calendar and delineation of Regional Impact of ENSO and IOD on the Map of Existing Cropping Calendar followed by an analysis to set the time and cropping patterns. The influence of ENSO and IOD is stronger in monsoon rainfall pattern compared to equatorial. Both phenomena are a strong influence on the period September-November. In areas with monsoon rainfall patterns, ENSO has a strong influence in most of the northern region of West Java while IOD strongly influences the majority of the South region of West Java. In a region with a pattern of ENSO and IOD equatorial rainfall effect in parts of West and South West Sumatra. About 84% of rice area in West Java are in areas affected by ENSO and IOD simultaneously while in West Sumatra is only about 20%. The monsoon regions are affected strongly by ENSO and IOD lead to delayed 1-3 ten days period early in the season and potential planting time is shorter when compared with other affected regions, while in the equatorial region of influence of ENSO and IOD showed no difference in planting time shift. This article presents analysis results of climate change impact on agricultural water availability in Cimanuk Watershed, Indonesia. STREAM was utilized to model agricultural water availability through FAO MOSAICC web application. Climate spatial data time-series were generated using 3 Global Climate Model (GCM), i.e.,: CanESM2, CNRM-CM5, and MPI-ESM-MR following two climate change scenarios of RCP4.5 and 8.5. Model inputs were split into three periods of 1981–2010 (historical), 2010–2039 (near-future), and 2040–2069 (far-future). Historical data model validation showed the efficiency coefficient of the observed and simulated discharge data ratio was 0.68. The objective of this study was to double production by True Shallot Seed (TSS) in sandy land agr... more The objective of this study was to double production by True Shallot Seed (TSS) in sandy land agro-ecosystems, widely adapted especially in temperate climate regions. Even though vegetative planting has been carried out using tubers in rice fields and dry land in Indonesia, not much has been done on sandy land. Another research gap also presents from the considerably low actual productivity (10-15 t ha-1) that still can be doubled (>20-30 t ha-1) in sandy land. The study used three varieties (Lokananta, Bima, and Trisula) and carried out in three stages: characterization and identification of soil biophysical properties, an in-site study of the seed nursery system of TSS, and an assessment of cultivation development based on plant populations increasing production. This study resulted in TSS productivity 30.66-236.00% higher than average national productivity for all three varieties; this is a novel finding. TSS productivity on sandy land ranging from 14.831 to 28.178 t ha-1 was above the national average production at 10.48 t ha-1 of bulb-seed originated shallots. Thus, this result indicates that TSS seed planting system is more profitable, particularly for shallot seed producers (traders and farmers), aside from saving transportation costs. Another benefit is supporting planning and agronomy development, especially the progress of planting shallot from seeds in Indonesia.

The results showed that the water balance analysis in Bandar Sidoras Irrigation Area with an equatorial rainfall pattern has a water surplus period of 2 to 3 months longer than the Mrican Kanan and Gadungan Lambuk Irrigation Area, which have a monsoon rainfall pattern. The aims of this study are: (1) to design an efficient solar pump irrigation system for shallots and red chili, and (2) to measure the irrigation efficiency of the solar pump irrigation system. The configuration of the solar water pump irrigation system should be determined on the basis of (1) the pump performance curve, (2) the irrigation system performance curve and (3) the pump discharge and the operating pressure curve. Our results show that the operational duration of the pump for 7.59 hours/day in Playen Sub-District, Gunungkidul was able to irrigate 2,333 m2, while in Imogiri Sub-District, Bantul a regime of 5.42 hours/day could irrigate 3,630 m2. This article presents analysis results of climate change impact on agricultural water availability in Cimanuk Watershed, Indonesia. STREAM was utilized to model agricultural water availability through FAO MOSAICC web application. Climate spatial data time-series were generated using 3 Global Climate Model (GCM), i.e.,: CanESM2, CNRM-CM5, and MPI-ESM-MR following two climate change scenarios of RCP4.5 and 8.5. Model inputs were split into three periods of 1981–2010 (historical), 2010–2039 (near-future), and 2040–2069 (far-future). Historical data model validation showed the efficiency coefficient of the observed and simulated discharge data ratio was 0.68. The objective of this study was to double production by True Shallot Seed (TSS) in sandy land agr... more The objective of this study was to double production by True Shallot Seed (TSS) in sandy land agro-ecosystems, widely adapted especially in temperate climate regions. Even though vegetative planting has been carried out using tubers in rice fields and dry land in Indonesia, not much has been done on sandy land. Another research gap also presents from the considerably low actual productivity (10-15 t ha-1) that still can be doubled (>20-30 t ha-1) in sandy land. The study used three varieties (Lokananta, Bima, and Trisula) and carried out in three stages: characterization and identification of soil biophysical properties, an in-site study of the seed nursery system of TSS, and an assessment of cultivation development based on plant populations increasing production. This study resulted in TSS productivity 30.66-236.00% higher than average national productivity for all three varieties; this is a novel finding. TSS productivity on sandy land ranging from 14.831 to 28.178 t ha-1 was above the national average production at 10.48 t ha-1 of bulb-seed originated shallots. Thus, this result indicates that TSS seed planting system is more profitable, particularly for shallot seed producers (traders and farmers), aside from saving transportation costs. Another benefit is supporting planning and agronomy development, especially the progress of planting shallot from seeds in Indonesia.

The serious paddy droughts that occur during El Niño climate cycles has increased political awareness of the need to incorporate these in drought-forecasting and warning systems for effective drought management. In this study, we develop a paddy drought hazard forecasting system (PDFS) based on a web-based geographic information system (GIS). The Drought Hazard Index (DHI) was used to derive a deterministic forecast model, which is a simplified version of the probabilistic forecast model used in the previous version of this system.
