The next generation of devices for personal healthcare monitoring will comprise molecular sensors... more The next generation of devices for personal healthcare monitoring will comprise molecular sensors to monitor analytes of interest in the skin compartment. Transdermal devices based on microneedles offer an excellent opportunity to explore the dynamics of molecular markers in the interstitial fluid, however good acceptability of these next generation devices will require several technical problems associated with current commercially available wearable sensors to be overcome. These particularly include reliability, comfort and cost. An essential pre-requisite for transdermal molecular sensing devices is that they can be fabricated using scalable technologies which are cost effective. We present here a minimally invasive microneedle array as a continuous monitoring platform technology. Method for scalable fabrication of these structures is presented. The sub-wavelength concentration and propagation of electromagnetic energy are two complementary ... more The sub-wavelength concentration and propagation of electromagnetic energy are two complementary aspects of plasmonics that are not necessarily co-present in a single nanosystem. Here we exploit the strong nanofocusing properties of stacked optical antennas in order to highly concentrate the electromagnetic energy into a 5 nm metal-insulator-metal (MIM) cavity and convert free radiation into guided modes. The proposed nano-architecture combines the concentration properties of optical nanoantennas with the propagation capability of MIM systems, paving the way to highly miniaturized on-chip plasmonic waveguiding.

In this work the design, fabrication and optical characterization of a polarization-sensitive L-s... more In this work the design, fabrication and optical characterization of a polarization-sensitive L-shape nanoantenna device are reported. Such configuration supports plasmon-polariton modes that are combinations of in-phase and out-of-phase single antenna long-axis surface plasma oscillations. In the former case charges distributions induce in the gap region an intense hot spot while in the latter one a ''zero-field spot'' occurs in a plasmonic mode which can be referred to a non-zero dipolar momentum.

The device shows two distinct plasmon resonances associated with the main axes of the elongated nanostructures and is able to significantly enhance the Raman signal when the excitation wavelength matches one of these resonances.
