We use ANTONELLO, MSI system, to acquire 18 spectral images that we elaborate with its included software. We can generate false color maps to distinguish the pigments and even reflectance spectra to identify them. This test revealed modern pigments, indicating a much later coloring of this 16th-century historical print. Coloring original historical prints was a common practice for the reseller in order to increase the appeal and so the value of the item.

Technical Photography (TP) represents a collection of images realized with a modified digital camera sensitive to the spectral range Ultraviolet-Visible-Infrared. You will use different lighting sources and filters to acquire a selection of technical images, each one providing different information regarding the object under examination. The Technical Photography KIT includes all you need to acquire these images.
Learn Technical Photography with our TP-KIT. This KIT has ALL-You-Need to start right away to take technical images of your art collection.
All is explained step-by-step in our Online FREE Technical Photography Course: https://chsopensource.org/courses/technical-photography-tp/ Art conservators fill in losses in paintings with retouches.

They do their best to make retouches undetectable, yet, we can still see them with FABRIZIO, the UV lamp for Art Examination.
Retouches look darker than the rest of the original paint.
Icon, 19th century, original paint shows a yellowish fluorescence, and retouches are dark.
Oil painting, 19th century, original paint shows a greenish fluorescence and retouches are dark.

Some pigments become transparent in the near-infrared and infrared photography can reveal underdrawing and changes. In particular, ochre pigments (yellow ochre, red ochre, raw sienna…) and red and yellow lakes are the ones that become more transparent totally revealing traces of hidden drawings.
Infrared Fluorescence photography (IRF)
Some molecules and minerals (among them mineral pigments) exhibit Infrared Fluorescence. This phenomenon is similar to Ultraviolet Fluorescence where a beam of ultraviolet light produces visible light emission. In the case of infrared fluorescence, a beam of visible light generates an emission of infrared radiation. IRF photography allows us to map and detect Egyptian blue and cadmium-based pigments. 11 views

Art examination starts with high-quality photographic documentation in the standard visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum, We call it a VIS photo, and we shoot it using the VIS filter of the Robertina Filter Set and the ELIO lamps. With our TP-KIT you can also perform 2 other methods, still in this visible range: Polarized light photography (PL) and Raking light photography (RAK). These are very helpful photographic methods widely used by fine arts photographers and conservators. PL photography eliminates surface reflections (from varnish or metallic objects) and professional photographers use it for high-quality documentation of art. It also increases the color saturation of pigments, thus it makes more readable faded art and archaeology. 4 views

These custom-made filters are all you need to perform Technical Photography (TP). In our Online Training program, we illustrate how to use these filters to produce technical photos such as IR (Infrared), UVF (UV Fluorescence), UVR (UV Reflected), IRFC (Infrared False Color), and IRF (IR Fluorescence). These images reveal information such as underdrawing and retouches. They can enhance the reading of faded documents and provide a tentative identification of pigments. 2 views

The main application of this method is to identify and map modern white pigments (zinc white and titanium white) which absorb UV radiation and appear dark in UVR photography. On the other hand, the historical lead white pigment is a very good UV reflector and shows up very bright in UVR images. Lead white was used from antiquity to the 1920′ when the modern and safe titanium white totally replaced it. 2 views

It is based on the standard Gorgias system but it is optimized to cover a wider range into the UV, up until 200 nm.
With GorgiasUV, we can now explore, with much more reliability, the extreme part of the UV spectrum, getting helpful information for pigments identification.
