This high luminosity (HL) version of the LHC will increase the nominal luminosity by a factor of five. One of the key technologies of the HL-LHC are the new superconducting Inner Triplet (IT) magnets, responsible of producing high magnetic fields to focus particle beams. To power the IT magnets from the grid, a multi-stage power supply with an intermediate 24 V battery pack is being considered. In such topology, a lowvoltage high-current DC/DC converter operating with a very high step down-ratio is required for the final conversion stage. In this work, an interleaved multiphase Series Capacitor Buck converter is proposed to feed the IT magnets from the battery pack. A novel voltage regulation approach that ensures the current balance between the paralleled Series Capacitor cells is also proposed, where one cell is responsible for the output voltage regulation, while the remaining cells are current regulated. A balanced current sharing between the Series Capacitor cells is achieved, when the current controlled cells are referenced by the actual current of the 1st one. The proposal is theoretically analysed and experimentally validated in a six cell 1000 A prototype unit. The controller is designed to achieve a torque ripple reduction by taking advantage of the increase in the number of inverter states available in a three-level inverter. The harmonic distortion in the stator currents and the switching frequency of the semiconductor devices are also reduced in the new control system presented.

For this purpose a new flux model (“INFORM model”) is used, working properly at each operating condition, especially at low angular velocity. At higher angular velocity, an e.m.f.-based model is used. A Kalman filter estimates the angular position, the angular velocity and the torque. An optimal state controller is presented which yields good dynamic performance. The system is realized on a digital signal processor.

An analytical analysis, which demonstrates that the HF band is perturbed under sensorless operation, is addressed. Further increase of the sensorless control dynamics is achieved by removing the perturbed signals by means of compensation terms, which also estimate the PMSM αβ inductance value. Numerical simulation results are presented, confirming the proper speed sensorless control at low speed reversal with load impact as well as under position control.

The strategy is based on replacing the MC zero vectors for the rotating ones, which reduces the CM voltage derivative and therefore the leakage CM current. By reducing this CM current, which might flow inside the motor through the bearings and windings, the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) deterioration might be slowed down. The paper describes the novel SVM pattern and analyses the CM voltage and its leakage current. Simulation results based on PMSM drive are provided to corroborate the whole idea. I.

Among various sensorless control techniques developed, Matsui's current model-based approach and the extended Kalman filter approach have gained much attention. However, the performance of these control methods can be severely worsened or may even become unstable under strong disturbances or sensing failures. This paper presents a comparative study of the extended Kalman filter, the resilient extended Kalman filter, and the unscented Kalman filter-based sensorless direct torque and flux control approaches for the surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. Computer simulation studies and hardware implementation results have shown the efficiency and superior performance of the resilient extended Kalman filter and the unscented Kalman filter over the traditional extended Kalman filter for sensorless direct torque control applications.

A predictive algorithm which ensures minimum torque ripple is employed for the selection of the appropriate voltage vector from the Matrix Converter. A new look-up table for Direct Torque Control using Matrix Converters has been developed which delivers a set of three vectors, at every sample period, that fulfil the torque and flux demands. The predictive algorithm computes the torque error that would be present applying each vector and selects the one that contributes with the minimum error. Simulation results, which confirm the good performance of the novel predictive Direct Torque Control using Matrix Converters are shown.
