Journal of Innovation in Psychology, Education and Didactics . 2020;24(1):7-24.Through the participation of pre-service teachers in a six-month, long-term internship, the pre-service teacher collaboration could be examined for the first time over a longer teaching practice phase. N = 74 students in a master of education program were interviewed before and after the long-term internship with respect to their general team orientation, their attitudes towards collaboration, their intentions to carry out future collaborative behaviors in the future as well as their performance of collaboration during the long-term internship. The results show that the pre-service teachers’ intentions to collaborate decreased during the long-term internship, especially in case of pre-service primary school teachers. Female future teachers rate collaboration higher and report a greater intention to collaborate than male future teachers. Male student teachers perform collaboration more frequently than female student teachers. Future teachers are less team oriented than in-service teachers. Future teachers report a greater intention to collaborate than in-service teachers.

This cross-sectional study (N = 1687, 4 cohorts) investigates future teachers’ intentions to coll... more This cross-sectional study (N = 1687, 4 cohorts) investigates future teachers’ intentions to collaborate and their attitude towards collaboration with standardized questionnaires. Two of the cohorts provide additional information about their performance of collaboration in a school setting outside the university. ANOVA and post-hoc analyses are performed to determine group differences. First-year pre-service teachers rate collaboration lower in importance and intend to collaborate less than the other cohorts. Three collaborative actions are examined: exchange, division of work, and co-construction. While exchange is found to be the most popular form of collaboration, student teachers report performing the higher-level forms more frequently.

Teacher collaboration together with (self-)reflection is a key factor to improve teacher professi... more Teacher collaboration together with (self-)reflection is a key factor to improve teacher professionalism. Nevertheless, collaboration among teachers is not being used sufficiently. One approach to change this is to implement collaborative behaviours earlier, in the university-based teacher-training. To develop eligible methods, the status quo must be defined first. Therefore, this paper researches how, with whom and why education students and trainee teachers collaborate. The study is based on a mixed methods design: At first, qualitative interviews were held to define the structures of collaboration. Main results were, that especially students in the examined internship prefer to collaborate with teachers rather than with their fellow students. Also, collaboration happens spontaneously, and planned structures between teachers and interns are rarely found. All in all, the main collaboration form is exchange (of materials and information) whereas higher forms of collaboration are seldomly realized. To gain more profound numbers, the results were transformed into a standardized questionnaire. In this second quantitative study, 1763 educational science students and trainee teachers participated. The statistic results will be the base for a third study which will be qualitative again in form of episodic interviews. The aim is to explain the quantitative results and point out structures, where universities and schools can start to act and improve the teacher collaboration at an early point of their career to improve teacher professionalization through teacher education. This paper presents the results of the first two studies as well as the leading questions for the future interviews.
