Growing numbers of older people need help with financial matters, and relatives and friends are l... more Growing numbers of older people need help with financial matters, and relatives and friends are likely to be the first involved. At the same time, older people's financial resources are increasingly complex. In some families, differences in expectations or conflicts of interest among different members may bring further complications. A scoping study found a lack of systematic information on the role of carers in helping older people manage money and assets. Other findings from the scoping study indicate both the growing importance and the complexity of asset management in later life; the information needs of older people and their relatives and friends; and the need for further research into these issues to inform the development of policy and practice.

Work Programme Evaluation: the participant experience

This report brings together and summarises the key evidence available from the different strands ... more This report brings together and summarises the key evidence available from the different strands of the Work Programme evaluation relating to the experience of participants (a parallel report, Foster et al., 2014, sets out the findings relating to Work Programme providers). In particular, it presents analyses from two waves of a large scale longitudinal survey of participants and a multi-wave (partly cross-section, partly longitudinal) programme of in-depth qualitative fieldwork with participants. Previous reports from the evaluation (Newton et al., 2012, and Lane et al., 2013) presented early findings on programme delivery and programme commissioning respectively. A final synthesis report, summarising the overall evaluation is planned for publication in 2015. The evaluation tracks the Work Programme over several years from its launch in 2011. Aspects of the socio-economic costs of bereavement in Scotland were estimated using three sets of... more Aspects of the socio-economic costs of bereavement in Scotland were estimated using three sets of data. Spousal bereavement was associated with increased mortality and longer hospital stays, with additional annual cost of around £20 million. Cost of bereavement coded consultations in primary care was estimated at around £2.0 million annually. Additionally, bereaved people were significantly less likely to be employed in the year of and two years after bereavement than non-bereaved matched controls, but there were no significant differences in income between bereaved people and matched controls before and after bereavement.

Understanding trends and changes in the circumstances of couples separated by death is important ... more Understanding trends and changes in the circumstances of couples separated by death is important for policy initiatives to reduce vulnerabilities associated with end of life care and for those who live on. This article uses widow(er)hood statistics and census data from the Office for National Statistics Longitudinal Study. It examines changes in couples&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; living arrangements and households at four successive censuses from 1971 to 2001 and shows how these differ by age and gender on the death of a spouse or partner. Findings draw attention to the effects of ageing and mortality improvements as well as wider social and economic trends in family and household formation, residential independence in older age, and policy developments on long-term care provision for older people.

reporting qualitative applied social research is strengthened by evaluative tools which point to ... more reporting qualitative applied social research is strengthened by evaluative tools which point to presentation of extracts of original data as indication of clarity of links between data, interpretation and conclusion. This article contributes to discussion about 'quality' criteria and the role of verbatim quotations from the perspectives of those who speak the words. The authors describe an exploratory empirical study to test the impact on research participants of seeing their words in a report. This small study is part of a wider, ESRC funded study of the theory, practice and impact of using verbatim quotations in reporting applied social research. Findings from the exploratory study raise important issues. Research participants preferred the version of the report which included spoken words, and saw ways in which spoken words contributed positively to interpretation and reporting. However, the 'quality indicators' perceived in relation to the verbatim quotations sometimes did not reflect the authors' intentions in selecting and using the words. Participants had strong views on ethical issues associated with use of their spoken words. Maintaining anonymity was important, as was the way they perceived themselves represented as a result of the authors' editing decisions and the form of the attributions at the end of the quotations. The study raises questions about how far and in what way perspectives of research participants should be taken into account in judging 'quality' of qualitative research.

This article investigates the nature, context, and impact of economic stressors associated with l... more This article investigates the nature, context, and impact of economic stressors associated with loss, drawing on a mixed-methods study of changes in financial circumstances and economic roles following death of a life partner. Findings show how economic changes, and the practicalities of dealing with such transitions, shaped individual responses to the death. Perceived decline in financial wellbeing was associated with increased risk of poor psychological health following bereavement. The findings underline the theoretical importance of financial risk factors for anticipating the duration, pattern, and timing of bereavement outcomes. A challenge for service providers and professionals is how to bring understanding of economic components within emotional and practical support for people preparing for death and those who are bereaved.
