Commentaries about their teacher's thought start from the Dialogues. However, they also include references to other Plato's doctrines which Aristotle generically named «ἄγραφα δόγματα». Those who have closely followed his teachings had become «Plato's indirect tradition». This article is an introduction to the meaning of such indirect tradition. Starting with Plato's disciples at the Academy, we shall analyse in detail the textual typology in Plato's indirect tradition and focus on some fragments by Plato's disciples and by commentators of those disciples, with particular attention to those of Aristotle. The aim is to make understandable the meaning of the indirect tradition, which is still a lively issue, notwithstanding that tension between «orallity» and «writing» is still at the basis of long lasting debates amongst Platonists.
