With its biodegradability, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is a good candidate for packaging material, especially in the form of an electrospun membrane. The preparation of nonwoven fabric of PCL loaded with food additive, antimicrobial nisin makes them an active packaging with antispoilage properties. During the investigation of the nonwoven fabric mats, different concentrations of nisin were obtained from the solution of PCL via the electrospinning technique. The obtained active porous PCL loaded with varying concentrations of nisin inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Packages made of PCL and PCL/nisin fibrous mats demonstrated a prolongation of the fruits’ freshness, improving their shelf life and, consequently, their safety.

The heterogeneity of the disease also means that identification and subsequent validation of biomarkers of the disease is quite challenging. A fully validated single biomarker for diagnosis, prognosis, disease activity and assessment of response to therapy is not yet available. The main aim of this study was to apply an alternative assay protocol to the immunoassay-based analysis of this disease by employment of sialic acid recognizing lectin Sambucus nigra agglutinin (SNA) to glycoprofile *

Fluorene-based polymers with vinyl groups as end chains and side chains functionalities were also prepared. In both cases, successful preparation of functionalized Parylene C films (modylayers) was achieved. The set of spectral methods used has allowed us to conclude that such functionalization is based on the chemical reaction of double bonds with xylylene radicals during deposition process. Parylene C films chemically modified with specially synthesized polyfluorenes showed PL quantum efficiency comparable with neat polyfluorenes.

ABSTRACT Novel chalcones (3-phenyl-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-ones) substituted on one end (position 3) ... more ABSTRACT Novel chalcones (3-phenyl-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-ones) substituted on one end (position 3) with electron donating diphenylaminophenyl substituent and on the other end (position 1) with thiophenes with variable electronic effects (CH-1–CH-5) were prepared. The spectral properties of these molecules in solvents such as chloroform, cyclohexane, acetonitrile, methanol and incorporated into polymer matrices of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were compared with those of 3-[4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-phenyl]-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (CH-1m) and 3-[4-(N,N-dimethylamino)phenyl]-1-(4-nitrophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (CH-2m). The longest wavelength absorption band of model chalcones CH-1m and CH-2m was in the range of 400–420 nm and did not appear to be influenced by the medium. The fluorescence increased with the addition of acetonitrile, while it was effectively quenched in methanol. The strong electron-attracting nitro group quenched the fluorescence of CH-2m in nearly all solvents. In contrast, the fluorescence became more intense when the molecule was incorporated in a polymer matrix. The longest wavelength absorption band of novel chalcones was observed in the range of 410–450 nm in all media. The fluorescence of chalcones was red-shifted to the range of 530–575 nm and was most intense in chloroform. The quantum yield of fluorecence was the highest in chloroform for the chalcone with a methyl-thiophene (0.49) and low for the chalcone with a fluorenyl-thiophene group (0.07). The fluorescence of all chalcones (CH-1–CH-5) was effectively quenched in polar acetonitrile and methanol, and was less intense relative to chloroform when incorporated into a polymer matrix and more intense relative to other solvents. The lifetime of fluorescence was in the range of 1–4 ns. The Stokes shift was in the range of 4000–5000 cm−1 in chloroform, and lower in all other media. The spectral behavior of model chalcones CH-1m and CH-2m and novel chalcones with diphenylamino substituents was similar, producing observable fluorescence in several polymer matrices. The effect of the solvent on the fluorescence is discussed in terms of negative and positive solvatokinetic effects.

In this article review, the hydrogels that are based on natural polymers containing electrically conductive medium were covered, while both irreversible and reversible cross-links are presented. Among the conductive media, a special focus was put on conductive polymers, such as polyaniline, polypyrrole, polyacetylene, and polythiophenes, which can be potentially synthesized from renewable resources. Preparation methods of the conductive irreversible hydrogels that are based on these conductive polymers were reported observing their electrical conductivity values by Siemens per centimeter (S/cm). Additionally, the self-healing systems that were already applied or applicable in electrically conductive hydrogels that are based on natural polymers were presented and classified bas...

Ketone semicarbazones react with two moles of phosphorus oxychloride-dimethylformamide with the formation of 3-substituted pyrazol-4-carbaldehydes. The transformations of 3-substituted pyrazole-4-carboxaldehydes to 3-substituted pyrazole-4-nitriles were carried out by reaction of hydroxylamine in DMFA. The prepared cyano pyrazoles were converted to tetrazoles by heating with trimethylsilylazide and dibuthyltinoxide in toluene.

However, managing the waste composed of these materials is one of the most significant environmental issues confronting us in the present day. Recycling polymeric waste is the most important action currently available to reduce environmental impacts worldwide and is one of the most dynamic areas in industry today. Utilizing this waste could not only benefit the environment but also promote sustainable development and circular economy management. In its program statement, the European Union has committed to support the use of sorted polymeric waste. This study reviews recent attempts to recycle this waste and convert it by alternative technologies into fine, nano-, and microscale fibers using electrospinning, blowing, melt, or centrifugal spinning. This review provides information regarding applying reprocessed fine fibers in various areas and a concrete approach to mitigate the threat of pollution cause...

The crops that do not meet the supply chain requirements and waste from their processing are overfilling landfills. The mentioned wastes contain cellulose, which is the most abundant carbon precursor. Therefore, one of the possibilities of returning such waste into the life cycle could be preparing the activated carbon through an eco-friendly and simple route. Herein, the carrot pulp from the waste was used. Techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis (EA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the thermal treatment effect during the carbon material preparation. The development of microstructure, phase formation, and chemical composition of prepared material was evaluated. The obtained carbon material was ...

The effect of silk fibroin on morphology, fibers diameters, pores size, wettability, chemical structure, thermo-mechanical properties, filtration efficiency, filtration performance, and comfort properties such as air and water vapor permeability was investigated. The filtration efficiency (FE) and quality factor (Qf), which represents filtration performance, were calculated from penetration through the membranes using aerosol particles ranging from 120 nm to 2.46 μm. The fiber diameter influenced both FE and Qf. However, the basis weight of the membranes has an effect, especially on the FE. The prepared membranes were classified according to EN149, and the most effective was assigned to the class FFP1 and according to EN1822 to the class H13. The impact of silk fibroin on the air permeability was assessed. Furthermore, the ant...

Silk fibroin also gained particular interest as a drug carrier vehicle, and numerous silk formats have been investigated for this purpose. Herein, we have prepared electrospun nanofibers from pure silk fibroin and blended silk fibroin/casein, followed by the incorporation of an anti-inflammatory drug, diclofenac. Casein serves as an excipient in pharmaceutical products and has a positive effect on the gradual release of drugs. The characteristics of the investigated composites were estimated by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, and a lifetime of diclofenac by electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. The cumulative release in vitro of diclofenac sodium salt, together with the antiproliferative effect of diclofenac sodium salt-loaded silk nanofibers against the growth of two ca...
