The analysis is driven by three research questions: What is the extent of the journal’s engagement with the terms profession, professionalism, professional, and professionalization? How are these terms used in the journal and how do these uses relate to the social justice imperative in SAS? Overall, the analysis shows that the professionalization discourse in JSAA draws strongly on notions that certain professional traits and high-level knowledge and skills must be possessed by SAS personnel for the field to be professionalized. Furthermore, the analysis reflects a stronger social justice discourse than a discourse on SAS as a profession. Finally, this article considers opportunities for a scholarship on the development of SAS as a profession.

How are these terms used in the journal and how do these uses relate to the social justice imperative in Student Affairs and Services (SAS)? Overall, we find a stronger social justice discourse in comparison to the discourse on SAS as a profession. Finally, this article considers opportunities for a scholarship on the development of SAS as a profession and further theoretical development of the Sociology of Professions (SoP) from the Global South.

We investigated progress towards these goals in the education of medical doctors, with an emphasis on gender. Databases from the Department of Education (DoE), Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences were used to explore undergraduate (MB ChB) trends at all eight medical schools and postgraduate (MMed) trends at UTC. Nationally women have outnumbered men in MBChB enrollments since 2000, figures ranging between 52% and 63% at seven of the eight medical schools in 2005. However, the rate of change in the medical profession lags behind and it will take more than two decades for female doctors to outnumber male doctors. A study of UCT postgraduate enrollments shows that females had increased to 42% of MMed enrollments in 2005. However, female postgraduate students were concentrated in disciplines such...

Despite numerous reforms, the South African health system, ten years into democracy, remains divided: first world private care that ranks with middle income countries internationally at the one end, and at the other extreme, in the rural public sector in particular, conditions that are superior only to the poorest of African countries. Much work has been done to change medical school curricula in line with the primary health-care focus of government policy, and international trends towards problem-based learning. The student profile in medical schools is now not only more representative of the demographics of South Africa, but also reveals a significant increase in female students. Whether these students will stay in the country after graduating, and serve...

The involvement of women in both conventional and unconventional forms of political participation... more The involvement of women in both conventional and unconventional forms of political participation in South Africa has over the past 10 years, and often at present, been experienced as problematic and limited. Exacerbating the problem of limited access and information, the study of, and literature about, women's participation in unconventional forms of politics have also been limited. It is the aim of this study to contribute to our knowledge in this area. This study investigates women's participation in unconventional politics between 1991 and 2001. This period is specifically important, as it makes possible the examination of trends in women's political participation before and after the democratic transition in 1994. This makes it possible for us to speculate about the influence of transition on women's political participation. I propose and evaluate two mam hypotheses in which I; firstly, expect women's participation in protest politics to decrease between 199...

This quest has particular significance in the nursing profession, which has lost many thousands of nurses to developed countries that are already better supplied with health professionals than South Africa. In this country, nurses are struggling ...

Some studies have found a positive relationship, some have suggested a negative one, while others maintain that there is no relationship between them. Acknowledging that a range of factors, other than funding, impact on student success, in this paper, we aim to contribute to a small, but emerging, body of literature on the relationship between student funding and academic performance, proxied by the average individual academic mark for the year. We applied descriptive and inferential statistics to a dataset of 29,619 students registered at two South African universities for the 2018 academic year. The results highlight that in an examination of the impact of being funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) in a bivariate context, it is possible to find a negative relationship with performance. However, at an aggregate level and controlling for the impact of other vari...

I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to and acknowledge my promoter, Professor Amanda Gouws, for her steadfast guidance throughout this process. I was not always confident, but your calm confidence and insightful remarks inspired me to have belief in myself. I would also like to thank my copromoter, Professor Marietjie de Villiers, for her support, especially at the start of this process, as well as for her helpful comments and insights on earlier drafts. It is also necessary to thank the three external reviewers for very comprehensive and helpful feedback on the previous draft of this dissertation. It would be inappropriate not to acknowledge the contributions made by the interviewees. Thank you all for being so generous with your very limited time, as well as being so open and candid about the difficulties you have all experienced in trying to navigate and juggle the responsibilities of combining a very demanding career with some sort of quality of personal life. I also have to give thanks to and acknowledge my immediate family. Mom, Dad, Earl and Cailean: through your love and unending support I have been given the very best foundations upon which to build my dreams. I love you all dearly. Then to the people that have to endure me for the most part of every day(and do so mostly with love): Clayton, Nicholas, Matthew and Aunty Marie. I am not me without any of you, and undoubtedly I would not have been able to achieve any of this without knowing that I have you to come home to. Lord God, how do I put into words the gratitude I have for being able to get up every morning, have the energy and strength to make it through the day, and have countless blessings throughout this journey to show me that indeed You are here with me every step of the way? All glory and praise must go to You. viii
