Elayne Angel is the author of The Piercing Bible--The Definitive Guide to Safe Piercing (Penguin Random House, June 2021). It is the only mainstream reference book on the subject. Angel is a body art pioneer who has performed approximately 50,000 piercings since the 1980s. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2006, she closed her New Orleans studio and relocated to Yucatán, Mexico, where she enjoys exploring cenotes, colonial cities, and ancient Maya ruins. She tours the U.S. working at quality studios, specializing exclusively in nipple and genital piercings. Angel also offers online services: consultations for piercing problems and anatomy/placement evaluations, in addition to one-on-one piercer coaching (customized continuing education for piercing professionals). She served four terms on the Board of Directors of the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) as President, Medical Liaison, and Outreach Coordinator

''I f you think your patients aren't pierced, that's because you aren't looking!'' These words of wisdom are shared by medical personnel who have special insight into the population of people with piercings. A recent study of undergraduate college students indicated that 51% of the students had something pierced besides their ears, while a 1999 study found that only 6 of 28 emergency physicians were able to accurately describe the proper removal process for the 3 most common types of body jewelry. 1,2 These 2 factors suggest the potential for problems in our emergency departments. When in doubt, do not take the jewelry out! Being distracted by body piercings or wasting time trying to remove most jewelry can delay more important medical care.

To provide quantitative and qualitative data that will assist evidence-based decision making for ... more To provide quantitative and qualitative data that will assist evidence-based decision making for men and women with genital piercings (GP) when they present to urologists in ambulatory clinics or office settings. Currently many persons with GP seek nonmedical advice. A comprehensive 35-year (1975-2010) longitudinal electronic literature search (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, OVID) was conducted for all relevant articles discussing GP. Authors of general body art literature tended to project many GP complications with potential statements of concern, drawing in overall piercings problems; then the information was further replicated. Few studies regarding GP clinical implications were located and more GP assumptions were noted. Only 17 cases, over 17 years, describe specific complications in the peer-reviewed literature, mainly from international sources (75%), and mostly with &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;Prince Albert&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; piercings (65%). Three cross-sectional studies provided further self-reported data. Persons with GP still remain a hidden variable so no baseline figures assess the overall GP picture, but this review did gather more evidence about GP wearers and should stimulate further research, rather than collectively projecting general body piercing information onto those with GP. With an increase in GP, urologists need to know the specific differences, medical implications, significant short- and long-term health risks, and patients concerns to treat and counsel patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Targeted educational strategies should be developed. Considering the amount of body modification, including GP, better legislation for public safety is overdue.

A triad of evidence for care of women with genital piercings

Purpose: To add three further dimensions of evidence for the care of women with genital piercings... more Purpose: To add three further dimensions of evidence for the care of women with genital piercings (GPs). Data sources: Following a literature review, a cross-sectional study replicated previous work, using a web-based survey. This triad of evidence provides (a) descriptive quantitative data (N = 240) about women with GPs, (b) qualitative data about women with GPs, as well as (c) clinical observations from 60 healthcare providers (HCPs) who have cared for women with GPs. Conclusions: Three important findings about women with GPs were validated: (a) GPs were deliberate actions, sought for personal and sexual expression; (b) women with GPs treat piercings as a normal, meaningful part of their lives which produce sexual enhancement and expression; and (c) they continue to seek information about GP care from nonhealth providers. New data indicate that they have experienced depression (47%), abuse (physical 18%; emotional, 27%; sexual, 14%), and forced sexual activity (35%) in their lives. Several unsubstantiated assumptions about women with GPs are challenged with these data. Implications for practice: GPs should not delay important health care. Health-protective, as well as health promotion, behaviors are important to reduce risks. Nurse practitioners (NPs) can become effective and resourceful advocates in three specific areas of care: (a) responsiveness to women with GPs, (b) collaborative decision making for the removal of jewelry, and (c) promotion of applicable patient education.

We congratulate the authors for their immense work and exploring the factors related to intimate ... more We congratulate the authors for their immense work and exploring the factors related to intimate body piercing, with particular emphasis on health issues. Genital piercing (GP) is still not very prevalent in Indian culture, although many genital piercing types (especially Apadravya and Appalling) may have their origin in Indian subcontinents. Piercing of the glans for the insertion of jewelery is a very ancient practice; the Apadravya piercing is mentioned in the Kama Sutra (AD 700) and the Malang piercing has been practiced in Southeast Asia for several hundred years. According to Vatsyayana, the author of The Kama Sutra, Apadravyas are any one of a number of devices that a man puts on or around the penis to supplement its length or its thickness, to fit into the vagina. The Kama Sutra was first translated into English in 1883 as The Aphorisms of Love by the adventurer-writer Sir Richard F. Burton and it contains reference to piercing of the penis. 1 By appearing in The Kama Sutra, genital piercing has perhaps been offered a degree of respectability and credence. In the present era, in Indian society, although GP is a growing trend, other forms of piercing, such as nose and ear piercings, are ubiquitous. Nose piercing was brought to India in the 16th century from the Middle East by the Moghul emperors. The left side of nose is most common to be pierced because that is the spot associated in Ayurveda (Indian medicine) with the female reproductive organs; the piercing is supposed to make childbirth easier and lessen menstrual pain. 2 Genital piercing may be seen as a symbol of rebellion against conservative values in Indian culture, and some orthodox people still do not react well to it. Despite this, GP appears to be gaining popularity and social acceptance. With the increase in the number of piercings, it is likely that health care providers may see an increase in the complications resulting from these piercings.
