ABSTRACT The effect of thyme essential oil (Thymus zygis, subspecies gracilis) on the quality and... more ABSTRACT The effect of thyme essential oil (Thymus zygis, subspecies gracilis) on the quality and shelf-life of gilthead seabream was studied, when added to the diet: a control diet and four experimental diets (T500, T1000, T1500, T2000) with 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg kg-1 of thyme essential oil, respectively. After 12 weeks of experimentation, the fish were stored on ice at 4 °C for 0, 7, 14 and 21 days. Physical-chemical, microbiological and sensory analyses were carried out at each sampling point to determine the degree of deterioration. A dose-dependent effect was observed on the color, TBARS and TVBN during the storage. Microbiological counts were lower for Enterobacteriaceae and coliforms at high doses of the essential oil. The sensory analysis showed an effect on the Quality Index that was not dependent on the dose, which extended the shelf-life of gilthead seabream from 17 to 18 days for all doses.

An increasing number of human cases of gnathostomiasis have been reported in Sinaloa, Mexico, mos... more An increasing number of human cases of gnathostomiasis have been reported in Sinaloa, Mexico, most of whom have a custom of eating of raw fish dishes such as 'cebiche'. Here we report five adult patients, three women and two men, having an acute episode of vomiting and abdominal pain a few minutes after eating a dish of cebiche prepared from a spotted sleeper perch (Eleotris picta) fished from a nearby lake in southern Sinaloa. All five patients experienced acute throat pain, chest and joint pains, headache and fever. One patient, a 55-year-old male, was hospitalized with suspected pancreatitis and pneumonia. By 8-9 days later, all five patients developed between three and 12 edematous, migrating skin lesions on the back, abdomen, upper and lower extremities, face, eye and scalp. By ELISA, all of them were sero-positive to Gnathostoma doloresi antigen and had elevated IgE levels. Eosinophilia was found in two patients. These patients lived in an agricultural and fishing community. In this community we carried out a sero-epidemiological survey and study of living conditions in a random sample of 309 individuals distributed in 74 households. Frequent consumption of raw fish was reported in 36% of households, and 12 individuals had a clinical history of migrating skin lesions. The sero-prevalence to Gnathostoma antigens was 34.95%. Five fish species and four species of ichthyophagous birds collected from three lakes in the village and a nearby estuary were infected with the advanced third-stage larvae of G. binucleatum, a species found in Ecuador and Mexico. The results describe the first known outbreak of acute gnathostomiasis on the American continent. ᮊ

ABSTRACT In this paper some theoretical tools are utilized that contributes the ontosemiotic appr... more ABSTRACT In this paper some theoretical tools are utilized that contributes the ontosemiotic approach of the mathematical cognition (Godino, 2002), in order to study how is put into play a network of objects and semiotic functions in the fragment of a textbook of the second course of High School - representative of the introduction to the defined integral - in students of the Autonomous Comunity of Andalucia (Spain). The analysis has as purpose to characterize the ontosemiotic complexity of the text and the potential semiotic conflicts that can be produced in the students that use it. Previously, a synthesis of the theoretical framework is presented, that includes the theory of the institutional and personal meanings of the mathematical objects and the theory of the semiotic functions. Dans cet article sont utilisés certains outils théoriques fournis par une approche ontosémiotique de la cognition mathématique (Godino, 2002) afin d'étudier la mise en jeu d'un réseau d'objectifs et de fonctions sémiotiques dans le fragment d'un livre de 1ère - représentatif de l'introduction à l'intégrale définie - dans les étudiants de la Communauté Autonome d'Andalousie (Espagne). L'analyse a pour objectif de caractériser la complexité ontosémiotique du texte précédemment mentionné, et les conflits sémiotiques potentiels qui peuvent se produire chez les élèves qui en font usage. Une synthèse du cadre théorique contenant la théorie des significations institutionnelles et personnelles des objets mathématiques et la théorie des fonctions sémiotiques est préalablement présentée. Neste artigo são utilizadas algumas ferramentas teóricas que aportam o enfoque ontosemiótico da cognição matemática (Godino, 2002), a fim de estudar como se põe em jogo una rede de objetos e funções semióticas de fragmentos de um livro de iniciação ao Cálculo Diferencial e Integral - representativo da introdução a integral definida - em estudantes de Comunidade Autônoma de Andaluzía (Espanha). A análise tem como propósito caracterizar a complexidade ontosemiótica de tal texto e os conflitos semióticos potenciais que se podem produzir nos estudantes que as usam. Previamente, é apresentado uma síntese do marco teórico, que inclui a teoria dos significados institucionais e pessoais dos objetos matemáticos e a teoria das funções semióticas. En este artículo se utilizan algunas herramientas teóricas que aporta el enfoque ontosemiótico de la cognición matemática (Godino, 2002), a fin de estudiar cómo se pone en juego una red de objetos y funciones semióticas en el fragmento de un libro del 2o. curso de Bachillerato - representativo de la introducción a la integral definida - en estudiantes de la Comunidad Autónoma de Andalucía (España). El análisis tiene como propósito caracterizar la complejidad ontosemiótica de dicho texto y los conflictos semióticos potenciales que se pueden producir en los estudiantes que lo usen. Previamente, se presenta una síntesis del marco teórico, que incluye la teoría de los significados institucionales y personales de los objetos matemáticos y la teoría de las funciones semióticas.
