The advent of the Internet and the explosion in the social media has vastly increased the scope for bullying, which has traditionally been talked about in the context of the school. As Baldry et al. (2016) remind us, ‘[c]yberbullying affects boys and girls of different ages all around the world since communication among peers has changed, and so have the risks of online communication’ (p. 7). Cyberbullying has been defined by Smith et al. (2008, p. 376) as ‘an aggressive act or behavior that is carried out using electronic means by a group or an individual repeatedly and over time against a victim who canno...

This chapter analyses the regulation of water crimes in Cyprus at different levels of governance, from the international, to the European, to the local. It traces key legislation applicable in relation to the protection of the environment in Cyprus, while highlighting the shortcomings of its effective enforcement. The chapter identifies the progress made at EU level in improving enforcement through criminalisation of infringements of key environmental law directives, including the Water Framework Directive. This progress, however, does not necessarily translate into effective enforcement through criminal law at the national level given the discretion granted to Member States in determining the severity of offences and ensuring their enforcement. Within this context, the chapter assesses the prevailing situation in Cyprus, emphasizing the institutional weaknesses of the authorities responsible for enforcement and analyzing key criminal cases before Cypriot courts that demonstrate the long way to go in achieving effective enforcement of criminal law relating to water offences.

It then goes on to report a qualitative study of eighteen intimate partner femicide (IPF) orphans during the period 2001-2014. Findings concerning IPF, offender, and victim characteristics but also pertaining to a broad range of themes that emerged in the face-to-face interviews with the orphans are also reported and discussed. In support of theoretical notions of power and control and gender inequality, the study reported also documents of a prior history of serious conflict, physical, verbal, and psychological abuse of the IPF victim by a jealous, possessive, controlling, and oppressive violent male partner or ex-partner. Evidence is provided of the tragic inability of the authorities to heed numerous warning signs and threats-to-kill by the offender and so avert such murders. Finally, attention turns to the policy and research implications of the findings with emphasis on lethal domestic violence prevention and better support of the orphans involved.
