The present work investigates the possibility of words borrowed (copied) from the (European) Avar... more The present work investigates the possibility of words borrowed (copied) from the (European) Avar language into Hungarian. The Avars occupied the centre of the Carpathian Basin, a region which is the present home of the Hungarians since the late 9th century, between the 6th and 9th centuries. However, there are some uncertainties and questions concerning the contact of the two peoples. The word "Avar" is put into quotation marks in the title to indicate, that it does not necessarily refer to a single language, as there were several languages spoken in the Avar Khaganate during its history without much doubt. First we try to determine, whether such borrowings were possible in principle. In order to achieve this, we give an account of Avar history. After having established the possibility of population contact, we go on by investigating the cultural and sociolinguistic framework of this potential contact.
