The addition of prediction mechanisms in Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) applied to dynamic environ... more The addition of prediction mechanisms in Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) applied to dynamic environments is essential in order to anticipate the changes in the landscape and maximize its adaptability. In previous work, a combination of a linear regression predictor and a Markov chain model was used to enable the EA to estimate when next change will occur and to predict the direction of the change. Knowing when and how the change will occur, the anticipation of the change was made introducing useful information before it happens. In this paper we introduce mechanisms to dynamically adjust the linear predictor in order to achieve higher adaptability and robustness. We also extend previous studies introducing nonlinear change periods in order to evaluate the predictor's accuracy.

The paper aims at presenting a conceptual framework integrating a Service Quality Assessment Conc... more The paper aims at presenting a conceptual framework integrating a Service Quality Assessment Concept in a methodological approach towards inclusive, safe, sustainable, and resilient transport systems to accommodate everyone’s mobility needs. Despite the improvement of public transport systems around the world, many users perceive: 1. Poor accessibility in most public transport systems; 2. Existence of physical barriers to free mobility in urban walking areas; 3. Increasing frequency of unexpected incidences as new norm in this 21st century (floods, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, pandemics, etc.).Furthermore, as transport operations are dynamic, increasing the level of uncertainty, the entire system is susceptible to extreme stresses that could propagate shocks throughout the entire network. Such risks highlight the importance of safety and comfort along each trip, such as providing seats for all, avoiding crowds in the vehicle, on stops, stations, and waiting areas, with contingency transport services in case of incidents.Meeting individual and collective mobility needs within a community is influenced by the existing and planned land use and depends on the available transport services. Furthermore, the enormous dispersion of individual limits to a free mobility related to a disability, older age or any temporary or occasional impairment or condition, accessible and inclusive transport services are required to fit the user’s mobility needs. The steps of the planned trip, like connections to other vehicle or network, could impose some difficulties that should be previewed, offering solutions to avoid exclusion. Finally, a barrier-free walking environment to reach or leave a transport network should complete the requests for the provision of transport services to accommodate everyone’s activity limits.The proposed Service Quality Assessment model is based on the quality loop involving the users’ feedback and the transport operators’ awareness of the planned and actual service level. Innovative technology supporting an Immersive Virtual Environment as a design, testing, and demonstration tool, will be described to identify new needs, design, test and to apply new solutions.

This paper presents and discusses certain generic issues relevant to the Man Machine Interface of... more This paper presents and discusses certain generic issues relevant to the Man Machine Interface of on-board Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT) systems. An investigation, using driving simulators, of the influence of drivers' age upon head up display design is presented. The reactions of elderly drivers to a Head Up Display were tested and compared with those obtained when the same drivers were presented with a traditional LCD screen. The following criteria were used to test drivers' reactions to messages displayed on the systems: a) eye movements; b) response time; c) driving performance; and d) drivers opinion of the workload imposed by the system. The effect upon driver performance of the size and complexity of the symbols used on the displays are also studied and presented. For the covering abstract see IRRD 868006.

According to the 11th goal of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN at the 2015 General Assembly ”to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable”, accessible, reliable, safe, and comfortable transport services are required to serve multiple trip origins and destinations.This abstract discusses the research needs for the inclusion and equity in sustainable and resilient transport services by outlining the steps towards the development of a Quality Service Assessment Model (QSAM).Transport Services and Their Inherent Qualities Planning community transport services with people in mind requires the provision of a high-quality service embodying the following parameters:Inclusion – Inclusive transport should be open to all by offering accessible, safe, comfortable, and reliable services with human support along the travel chain.Equity – An equal distribution of resources by level and type of transport services should ensure that accessibility and affordability for everyone in the community are built into the operation.Sustainability - Every transport service should be sustainable, both in environmental and economic terms, by offering green travel modes, which are adaptable to critical situations and reliable in schedule adherence.Resilience – When disruptive incidences or accidents occur during travel, the transport system should have standby solutions to ensure trip completion under safe and comfortable conditions.The Quality Service Assessment Model The QSAM is built upon the dynamic interactions in forum discussions by the following three actors: the Users versus those of the Service Providers. The third actor group involved would be independent Stakeholders composed of experts in the fields of Mobility, Transportation, Human Factors, and Rehabilitation, and Academicians, as they will balance the idea exchanges, hopefully resulting in recommendations on service improvements towards the fulfillment of the users’ needs within the service providers’ budgetary and policy constraints.MethodologyMultidisciplinary research teams are required in carrying out the following steps of work:1. Classify targeted user groups according to their mobility limits;2. Define relevant travel scenarios supported by simulation tools;3. Collect qualitative data by means of Focus Groups discussions that address both the users’ perception of the service quality relative to their needs and expectations, versus the service providers’ awareness about gaps between the actual/planned services.4. Design new improvement solutions to fill the service gaps;5. Develop guidelines and recommendations towards inclusion and equity in sustainable and resilient transport services.ConclusionsThis QSAM aims at developing an approach for community transport services that match users’ needs and expectations. Each recommended solution should be designed and tested in a simulation environment. The resultant design guidelines together with policy recommendations, to be published and disseminated, should guide transport providers in achieving the targeted inclusive and equitable mobility in a sustainable and resilient community.

Communication Needs and the Drivers’ Activity in Platooning Systems

The freight transport sector is requiring new solutions to overcome both the increase of energy c... more The freight transport sector is requiring new solutions to overcome both the increase of energy consumption costs and the environmental concerns about CO2 emissions. Thus, automation and truck platooning are being put into practice imposing to truck drivers’ behavioral adaptation and new training needs. Such changes introduce human factors issues that must be studied and put into the new equations towards the service improvement without compromising road safety. Thus, this is the right moment to talk to truck drivers and explain them the two main positive effects of the introduction of the platooning technology in the freight transport: 1. the clear improvement of the previous truck drivers’ working conditions, represented by long hours on the road and the related passive fatigue leading to drowsiness and sleep risk; 2. the fact of being assisted by the technology and being a team on the job cooperating in every task on board toward the main task completion. The platooning technology allows for two or more trucks running in convoy at a pre-defined distance between each other, being virtually connected using connectivity technology and automated driving support systems. Two categories of drivers are considered: the leader, who is responsible for the driving task, and the followers, who, depending on the level of function automation required by the job, may or may not have responsibilities in the driving task. Truck platooning use automated driving and different V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication such as V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle). This highlights the importance of human-to-human communication and the multiple human-system interactions towards the perfect coordination of actions. However, during the transition to full automation, the driver will still be kept “in the loop” or “on the loop”, as he/she will still be responsible for the driving task or, at least, for its supervision. Due to a strong dependence on different types of communications by this system, recent studies mention the need of a new categorization for the automation levels presented by SAE. Thus, the ENSEMBLE Project team proposes two new categorizations: Platooning Support Function and Platooning Automated Function. For this categorization, the following were considered: time between vehicles, lateral automation, speed lane, and the required operational areas. This requires deep research to avoid compromising road safety by the introduction of new risks, together with specific training for both categories of drivers.Portuguese freight companies, with regular transport across Europe are interested in introducing the platooning system. A new national research project (TRAIN) addresses these issues through an integrated approach that will identify the requirements for the development of truck platooning services and assess the requests for safe deployment in the real world. In a first stage, TRAIN selected professional truck drivers for Focus Groups (FG) aiming at collecting qualitative data about their acceptance, trust, reliance and willing to use levels. Due to the reduced number of participants, and taking into account the collected FG data, a survey is being launched. Then, the results will be discussed allowing for the simulations parametrization and tuning for the next experimental testing in driving simulator.

Older drivers, representing the most growing segment of the driving population, are generally con... more Older drivers, representing the most growing segment of the driving population, are generally considered safe and cautious drivers and it is known that they self-regulate their driving behavior to minimize the risk of crashing. However, their age-related perceptual and cognitive declines lead them to change their driving habits as a way of compensating their limitations and difficulties in driving. Being older drivers particularly vulnerable, it is considered that in-vehicle technologies represent a potential to increase safety and possibly save lives. Automation in the road transport system is coming faster than expected but most of the potential users have unrealistic representations of autonomous vehicles, the driver’s role in automation or the impacts of automation on the road transport system. Thus, the adoption of partial or full automation to help older drivers in the performance of the driving task is still requiring in-depth research, as well as the design and application of appropriate training programs.

Aiming at the definition of the experimental protocol of a field study to be conducted with truck drivers working exclusively at night, a review of literature has been made concerning research on the effects of light exposure on the human circadian rhythms. About 30 articles have been reviewed in order to describe the objectives and methodologies, and to synthesise and discuss the main results. These studies show a great variability of the protocols and results that make their comparison difficult. It is possible, however, to identify some factors justifying the divergence between results and to define recommendations that should be considered in the planning of future research in this field. Indeed CEMVOCAS has for main objective to design and elaborate a centralised management system of the different vocal interfaces controlling various car-equipments, in order to guarantee a better Automotive Safety. This project is conducted by Matra Nortel communications (MATRA) and includes the Research Centers of FIAT (CRF) and Renault (RIEGIENOV), AKG, Metravib RDS, INRETS and University of Lisbon (UTL). In this first ending phase of the project, a first pilot demonstrator has been built in order to validate in a first time the CEMVOCAS Concept, indeed through a first main functionality which consists in the control of mobile phone incoming calls according to the driver's availability. This paper presents an overview of the European project CEMVOCAS (Centralized Management of VOCal... more This paper presents an overview of the European project CEMVOCAS (Centralized Management of VOCal interfaces aiming a better Automotive Safety). The aim of this project was to develop a system to diagnose (in real time) the driver's availability to receive vocal information. After a brief introduction focused on the research context, the methodology used to design & develop this technology is described, and the main results from the prototype evaluation that have been carried out in real driving conditions are provided. Good performances are registered in terms of (a) effectiveness (more than 80 % of the driving situations are correctly identified by CEMVOCAS), (b) efficiency (the managed messages disturbed the drivers less often than the not managed ones), and (c) satisfaction (good user opinion concerning the benefits of the automatic message management in terms of comfort and safety). Ergonomics in Portugal as an undergraduate university course started in 1985, at the Faculty of H... more Ergonomics in Portugal as an undergraduate university course started in 1985, at the Faculty of Human Kinetics (FMH). During the last 32 years, changes have been introduced. Since 2007 the length of the course and rearrangement of the contents suffered modifications determined by the Bologna Agreement. Aiming at characterizing the profession, two questionnaires were applied to ergonomists. The first questionnaire was applied by FMH to a sample of 48 ergonomists and the second questionnaire was applied by the Portuguese Association (APERGO) to 43 ergonomists. Regarding the need of ergonomists in Portugal the prevalent opinion is that more ergonomists are and will be needed. Most of the ergonomists develop their work activity in the domain of Ergonomics (60.47%) and/or Health and Safety at work (55.8%). The Services sector (53.5%) is the main sector of activity for more than half of the sample. Industry (30.2%) and Education/Training (20.93%) are other sectors more represented. During...
