Considering the socioeconomic importance of ecosystems used for aquaculture in the state of Sergipe, the research aimed to study the socio-environmental aspects of aquaculture activities performed in the Baixo São Francisco in Sergipe, in the municipalities of Propriá, Brejo Grande, Pacatuba and Ilha das Flores. In Propriá, aquaculture takes place in excavated ponds. Products from the activity are released directly into the river without any treatment, causing impacts to the aquatic environment. In the municipality of Brejo Grande, there are shrimp farms because its predominant ecosystem is the mangrove. The expansion of such activity concerns various sectors of society regarding environmental and social impacts. Most Pacatuba properties develop aquaculture in ponds next to the dunes. The main impact of aquaculture activity in the target area is the introduction of exotic species, for example, the tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). In Ilha das Flores, fish farming is handled by the tank-net fishermen in the San Francisco River itself. The waste generated are released directly into the atmosphere, increase the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the river water, facilitating the proliferation of organisms. It is important to know the ecosystems to deal with environmental issues with local communities, the government and research institutions in order to seek sustainable solutions for the economic use of such ecosystems.

The aratu fishing is intense and few studies on the biology of the species, population dynamics and socioeconomic has been published. Therefore, this work aimed to characterize the population structure and reproductive aspects of G. cruentata, landed in the communities of Cajazeiras and Pontal, in Sergipe. The collections were made monthly when the new moon, from March 2015 to February 2016. The results showed that the carapace width (LC) of the animals ranged in Cajazeiras 25 to 53.8 mm and 59.6 mm in Pontal. Cajazeiras and Pontal showed different patterns for the percentage of females and males, considering the frequency of carapace width. Females were predominant in 26-48 mm class in Cajazeiras and in Pontal from 28 to 44 mm. The males were the majority in the longest lengths in Cajazeiras and Pontal, the result indicates th...

To develop the model, we undertook a three-round Delphi process with mangrove fisheries experts to identify the key drivers of mangrove fishing intensity. We then developed a conceptual model of intensity of mangrove fishing using those factors identified both as being important and for which appropriate global data could be found or developed. These factors were non-urban population, distance to market, distance to mangroves and other fishing grounds, and storm events. By projecting this conceptual model using geospatial datasets, we were able to estimate the number and distribution of mangrove associated fishers and the intensity of fishing in mangroves. We estimate there are 4.1 million mangrove associated fishers globally, with the highest number of mangrove fishers found in Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Brazil. Mangrove fishing intensity was greatest throughout Asia, and to a lesser extent West and Central Africa, and Central and South America.

The new species is distinguished from its congeners by having a short upper jaw, with its posterior tip extending between the verticals through anterior and posterior margins of the pupil (vs. posterior tip of upper jaw extending beyond the vertical through posterior margin of the pupil). Anchoviella juruasanga is also distinct from other strictly freshwater Amazonian species of the genus by the distance from tip of snout to posterior end of upper jaw between 8 and 11% in standard length (vs. 14% or more in A. alleni, A. carrikeri, A. guianensis, and A. jamesi). The anal-fin origin slightly posterior to or at the vertical through the base of the last dorsal-fin ray further distinguishes the new species from A. alleni (anal-fin origin posterior to the vertical through the last anal-fin ray by at least 14% of head length) and A. jamesi (a...

However, in many regions around the globe, including Brazil, this information is not available in a quality that is satisfactory. The objective of the initiative presented in this paper was to compile a country-wide database of marine commercial catch data in its original form (landings only) and a reconstructed version (which includes artisanal, industrial, recreational, and subsistence landings, as well as major discards), as well as to analyze historical trends. The basis for the country-wide database of marine catch statistics compiled here were the national official bulletins published in Brazil for the period 1950 to 2010. They represent an update of previous databases compiled for 1980-2000 and later for 1950-2004. These databases were revised and extended to include the whole period from 1950 to 2010 and all 17 coastal states in Brazil, from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul. Estimates for ...

The objective of this work was to reconstruct the national database of marine commercial landings for the Brazilian industrial and artisanal fisheries, from 1950 to 2015. Total landings increased strongly from 1950 to mid-1980s and suffered sharp decline in the early 1990s, mainly associated to the collapse of sardine fisheries. After that, another period of increasing landings was observed, but at a much lower rate. Industrial landings always surpassed artisanal landings in Brazilian waters, except for the beginning of the time series, when many industrial fleets had not started yet, and in the early 2000s, when a change in the methodology for collecting landing statistics was implemented in the state of Pará leading to an overestimation of artisanal landings. Artisanal fisheries have been declining since 2005, which is worrisome due to the social impact it may h...

This study aimed to identify aspects of fisheries and biology of Mugil curema , target of artisanal catches, which occur in the Vaza Barris River estuary. The results pointed out to four species of mullet identified in the study area: M. curema , which represented 85% of the catch, M. gaimardianus (fire eye), M. curvidens (with perceptible teeth) and M incilis (known as ‘azeitera’) the last three accounting for 5% of the total landed catch. The study also showed that 45% of females and 47% of the males are caught below the size at first maturity. The upshot of this fishery in Sergipe State is that there are not two fleets (artisanal and industrial) in operation, which minimizes conflicts and promotes the establishment of rules. It...

The main fishing landing port of the municipality of Aracaju is the Aracaju Fishing Terminal (T.P. Aracaju), located in the city center and responsible for 85% of the fishing landings. Data on fishing landings are essential tools for fisheries management, including caught species, fleet size, fishing gear and marketing. Therefore, this study’s aim was to analyze the data collected in the monitoring years from 2010 until 2016 at the T.P. Aracaju observing the developments of fish landings. The Fisheries Landings Monitoring Project - PMPDP specifically monitored and recorded the data at the Terminal Pesqueiro de Aracaju. The results showed that during the monitoring years the landings of fish from 92 vessels, locally called “lancha”, were recorded, of which 50 vessels originated from T.P. Aracaju and the other 42 vessels from other municipalities of Sergipe and other states of Brazil. The total annual product...
