In Brazil, Solid Waste Disposal Sites have operated without consideration of environmental criter... more In Brazil, Solid Waste Disposal Sites have operated without consideration of environmental criteria, these areas being characterized by methane (CH4) emissions during the anaerobic degradation of organic matter. The United Nations organization has made efforts to control this situation, through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, where projects that seek to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) can be financially rewarded through Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) if they respect the requirements established by the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), such as the use of methodologies approved by the CDM Executive Board (CDM-EB). Thus, a methodology was developed according to the CDM standards related to the aeration, excavation and composting of closed Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills, which was submitted to CDM-EB for assessment and, after its approval, applied to a real case study in Maringá City (Brazil) with a view to avoiding negative environmental impacts due the production of methane and leachates even after its closure. This paper describes the establishment of this CDM-EB-approved methodology to determine baseline emissions, project emissions and the resultant emission reductions with the application of appropriate aeration, excavation and composting practices at closed MSW landfills. A further result obtained through the application of the methodology in the landfill case study was that it would be possible to achieve an ex-ante emission reduction of 74,013 tCO2 equivalent if the proposed CDM project activity were implemented.

A Superconducting Linac is being installed as a booster for the 15 UD Pelletron accelerator at Nu... more A Superconducting Linac is being installed as a booster for the 15 UD Pelletron accelerator at Nuclear Science Centre (NSC). The accelerating structure for this linac is a Nb QWR cavity, designed and fabricated as a joint collaboration between NSC and ANL, USA. Initial cavities required for the first linac module were fabricated at ANL. For fabrication of cavities required for future modules a Superconducting Resonator Fabrication Facility has been set up at NSC. Three quarter wave resonator (QWR) cavities have been fabricated using the in-house facility. This facility has been used for repairs on the resonators which sprung leaks. Fabrication of fifteen resonators for the second and third linac modules is under progress. Eight resonators along with a superconducting solenoid has been installed in the first linac cryostat and tested for energy gain with a pulsed beam of 90 MeV Si from the Pelletron. Acceleration of the ions to 96 MeV was measured downstream and beam transmission through the linac was measured to be 1 00%.

Exploring the Insecticidal Potentiality of <i>Amorphophallus paeonifolius</i> Tuber Agglutinin in Hemipteran Pest Management

The role of mannose specific monocot lectins have recently been worked out in hemipteran pest management. The present article demonstrates the insecticidal efficacy of a new mannose specific agglutinin, isolated from tubers of Amorphophallus paeonifolius (AMTL) against a wide range of hemipteran insects. The 25 kDa dimeric protein was found to inhibit the survivability of hemipteran insects namely, Lipaphis erysimi, Aphis gossypii and Dysdercus cingulatus quite efficiently, as analysed by synthetic diet based bioassay experiments. Surface Plasmon Resonance study detected binding of insecticidal AMTL to insect gut brush border membrane vesicle (BBMV) protein, an absolute prerequisite for conferring toxicity against target insects. Further ligand blot analysis spotted a ~74 kDa glycoprotein as putative receptor of AMTL from the total BBMV protein fraction of Lipaphis erysimi. Phylogenetic analysis showed a significant relatedness of AMTL to the previously established monocot lectin Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) in terms of their conserved mannose binding domains, agglutinating ability of rabbit erythrocytes and insecticidal efficacies. These information project AMTL as a promising candidate in preventing crop loss caused due to hemipteran insect attack.

We discuss development of a word-unigram language model for online handwriting recognition. First... more We discuss development of a word-unigram language model for online handwriting recognition. First, we tokenize a text corpus into words, contrasting with tokenization methods designed for other purposes. Second, we select for our model a subset of the words found, discussing deviations from an N-most-frequent-words approach. From a 600-million-word corpus, we generated a 53,000-word model which eliminates 45% of wordrecognition errors made by a character-level-model baseline system. We anticipate that our methods will be applicable to offline recognition as well, and to some extent to other recognizers, such as speech recognizers and video retrieval systems.

ABSTRACT The laboratory portrait of Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) was published in N... more ABSTRACT The laboratory portrait of Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) was published in Nuclear Physics News in 2003 [1]. Since then, development of both the accelerator facilities and the experimental facilities have grown hand in hand. The booster superconducting linac is now in operation providing higher energy heavy ions into four beam-lines. New target stations house a neutron array and another the Hybrid Recoil Analyser that can work in either gas filled mode or in vacuum mode. The Indian National Gamma Array consisting of a maximum of 24 Ge clover detectors also uses this beam-line. One beam-line is dedicated for experiments on ion beam interaction in materials, having in-situ x-ray diffractometer, a micro Raman facility, and an elastic recoil detector set-up. The fourth beam-line is for atomic physics studies.

It is yet to be deciphered whether one subunit or both navigate the heterodimer to its cellular DNA targets. Tethering a specific DNA-binding protein to topoisomerase I alters its site specificity. The chimeric constructs UMSBP-LdTOPIL/S or U-L/S (fusion of UMSBP to the Nterminus of L and reconstituted with S) and LdTOPIL/ UMSBP-LdTOPIS or L/U-S (fusion of UMSBP to the N-terminus of S and reconstituted with L) exhibit relaxation activity. Only U-L/S shows altered site specificity and enhanced DNA-binding affinity for the universal minicircle sequence (UMS) containing substrate. This proves that L alone serves as the 'molecular steer' for this heterodimer. Reconstituted U-L/S also induces cleavage close to UMS and causes minicircle linearization. The differential properties of the reconstituted chimeras U-L/S and L/U-S reveal the structural and functional asymmetry between the heterodimer. Therefore this study helps in a better understanding of the mechanistic details underlying topoisomerization by this bi-subunit enzyme.

Phages are bacteria targeting viruses and represent the most abundant biological entities on eart... more Phages are bacteria targeting viruses and represent the most abundant biological entities on earth. Marine environments are exceptionally rich in bacteriophages, harboring a total of 4x10 30 viruses. Nevertheless, marine phages remain poorly characterized. Here we describe the identification of intact prophage sequences in the genome of the marine γ-proteobacterium Vibrio campbellii ATCC BAA-1116 (formerly known as V. harveyi ATCC BAA-1116), which presumably belong to the family of Myoviridae. One prophage was found on chromosome I and shows significant similarities to the previously identified phage ΦHAP-1. The second prophage region is located on chromosome II and is related to Vibrio phage kappa. Exposure of V. campbellii to mitomycin C induced the lytic cycle of two morphologically distinct phages and, as expected, extracellular DNA from induced cultures was found to be specifically enriched for the sequences previously identified as prophage regions. Heat stress (50°C, 30 min) was also found to induce phage release in V. campbellii. Notably, promoter activity of two representative phage genes indicated heterogeneous phage induction within the population.
