Analyzing a panorama of more than three hundred international biennials of contemporary art acros... more Analyzing a panorama of more than three hundred international biennials of contemporary art across the globe, some theorists offer alternatives to understand the exponential appearance of these mega exhibitions since the 1990s. In this essay, I discuss the information gathered by the Zurich University journal, OnCurating, in view of the historian Anthony Gardner's classification proposals, to then suggest that it is necessary to interpret the art biennials based on their political uses, in view of recent processes of globalization and what the Nigerian curator Okwui Enwezor called “will to globality”. I intend to demonstrate that, when investigating the reasons and impacts of mega art exhibitions in contemporary times, the political aspects that can identify each one of them must be pointed out due to the genealogy linked to international relations.
