In this paper, the water footprint of jumping sport horses’ production has been determined using the LCA methodology for the first time ever. The results of this paper show that the production of medium- and high-performance sport horses uses a large amount of water. However, modifications to the diet (type and percentage of oils in the supplement, place of origin of feed, etc.) and in the management and destination of waste (animal box beds) can result in a reduction of the water requirement and the environmental impact of production. This type of studies should be developed in different farms in the future in order to give producers management alternatives that improve the sustainability of productions.

The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of arsenic (As) present in irrigation water on the germination parameters of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seeds exposed to different concentrations of As(V). The germination and viability parameters of seeds from the three species were not affected by elevated concentrations of As. However, As significantly reduced the radicle and hypocotyl lengths of the three forage specimens. The inhibition level of the plants increased with the increase in the concentration of As. Regarding to hypocotyl length/radicle length ratio, the results evidenced that both the hypocotyl and radicle of clover species are affected in the same degree, while alfalfa radicles seemed more affected than hypocotyls at hig...

Studies on the impact of channels constructed to prevent catastrophes during flooding periods on ... more Studies on the impact of channels constructed to prevent catastrophes during flooding periods on the hydrology of the lower bed of the Salado River drainage basin (Argentina) were performed as related to total dissolved solids (TDS) and ionic composition. Results indicated that most Salado River discharge (TDS 1.5-7.0 g/l, sodium chloride bicarbonate type) goes into artificial Channel 15. This situation leads to the decrease in Salado River discharge between the beginning of Channel 15 and the river's mouth at Samborombón Bay. Before it reaches Samborombón Bay the river receives the surplus of freshwater coming from a rock shell aquifer, and this makes TDS decrease to 5-6 g/l. The presence of Channel 15 has had a large influence on the ecological and socioeconomic conditions in the region.

Trophic state and nutrient seasonal variation in the rivers and channels of the Samborombón Bay m... more Trophic state and nutrient seasonal variation in the rivers and channels of the Samborombón Bay mixohaline wetland (Argentina) Samborombón Bay is the most extensive mixohaline wetland of Argentina (244000 ha.). It has an extension of 150 km. along the occidental coast of the exterior zone of the Río de la Plata, from Punta Piedras (35 • 27 S; 56 • 45 O) to Punta Rasa (36 • 22 S; 56 • 35 O). The trophic state of the rivers and channels that cross this wetland was evaluated by the determination of total nitrogen (N t) and total phosphorus (P t) concentrations in ten stations situated from north to south of the bay. Samples were grouped according to seasonal variability, separating two periods, low water period and high water period. A hypertrophic state was observed in most of the analyzed stations, phosphorus being the limiting nutrient in almost every case in both periods. In addition to the seasonal variation in the nutrient concentrations, a spatial variation was observed in a north to south direction. Physico-chemical parameters were taken into account and, along with the nutrient concentration values, were analyzed by PCA (Principal Component Analysis), which suggested the existence of two groups with different characteristics. The increase in nutrients input in this ecosystem could cause alterations on the productivity of the area and on the activities of the region such as coastal fisheries.

The total As concentration in water (28.40-367.16μgL-1) exceeded national and international guidelines for the protection of the aquatic life. High concentrations of As (0.05-1.20 g kg-1 dry wt), were found in fish muscle however values were below international recommended limits for human consumption. The implication of As in fish products in South America is becoming an urgent issue due to the need to asses exposure limits to human consumption.

Despite the large number of papers published on this topic, discussion of the results in literature is valuable but insufficient in order to take concrete and practical decisions in remediation processes by using living plants. In this sense, there is a remarkable difference between approaches used for living and nonliving biomass. In this brief commentary we suggest a series of recommendations for planning experiments and for the processing of results when using plants in pollutants´ removal. The objective is obtaining useful and clear parameters such as the optimum contact time for maximum uptake of the pollutant, the removal rate and the maximum sorption capacity, to decide which species and conditions should be chosen for the uptake process.

Calcium amounts were 6.5% while magnesium was 9.9%. Potassium was less abundant with a mean value of 3.0%. Appreciable differences between summer and winter values were not observed. Since groundwater was the main source of surface water, a possible geochemical mechanism was proposed in order to achieve better understanding of the Pampasic pond's water chemistry. The processes that seem to be responsible for groundwater hydrochemistry are: cation exchange, ancient marine sediments dissolution and aluminosilicate weathering. The differences observed between surface water and shallow groundwater composition with respect to an additional enrichment in sodium may be attributed to the evaporation-crystallisation process promoting calcite precipitation.

The negligible slope is responsible for the disparity between the abundance of lentic water bodies and the low density of the drainage net. Lentic systems present different geomorphological origin and limnological characteristics. This paper presents a review of the most important characteristics of lentic systems (Pampean shallow lakes). Analogies and differences between these water bodies and a lake in Buenos Aires Southwest (Chasicó Lake) are analyzed. Pampean shallow lakes have a "basin" profile. They do not have a defined thermal cycle or persistent stratification. They do have continuous water circulation with an own sediment which differs from the surrounding emerged soil but they do not show a differentiation between the litoral and the central zones. Another typical feature of these water bodies is the presence of macrophytes. There are important differences between Chasicó Lake and the Pampean shallow lakes. Chasicó Lake has a geomorphologic tectoniceolian origin and a "U" shape profile. Its depth is significantly higher than the average depth of Pampean shallow lakes. This feature suggests that a temperature gradient may exist. It has not macrophytes on its coast. Sodium and chloride are the dominant ions in Chasicó Lake, which posses high salinity (> 25 g L -1 ), whereas in Pampean shallow lakes these are not dominant ions and the salinity is low (< 3 g L -1 ). Both water bodies (Chasicó Lake and the Pampean shallow lakes) are hypertrophic.
