These questions are tackled through the analysis of two corpora, one of Middle English and one of Early Modern English, namely the Penn-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Middle English (PPCME2) and the Penn-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Early Modern English (PPCEME). The chapter begins with some background information concerning the origin and the lifespan of conditional and . It discusses the research aims and the author's methods and their application. The chapter argues that the two corpora reveal the whole history of and as a conditional subordinate conjunction, from its appearance, through its increasing frequency in the Middle English period, to its decline and almost complete extinction in Early Modern English. Keywords: Early Modern English; Middle English period; PPCEME; PPCME2
