The aim of this chapter is to reveal more about conditional and : how frequently it occurred, whe... more The aim of this chapter is to reveal more about conditional and : how frequently it occurred, whether there is any specific context where its use was more prevalent, and in what kinds of conditional structure it was used most often. These questions are tackled through the analysis of two corpora, one of Middle English and one of Early Modern English, namely the Penn-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Middle English (PPCME2) and the Penn-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Early Modern English (PPCEME). The chapter begins with some background information concerning the origin and the lifespan of conditional and . It discusses the research aims and the author's methods and their application. The chapter argues that the two corpora reveal the whole history of and as a conditional subordinate conjunction, from its appearance, through its increasing frequency in the Middle English period, to its decline and almost complete extinction in Early Modern English.
