of Fine Art ofthe Uzbek Academy of Sciences, headed by E. V. Rtveladze
(Professor and Doctor of Historical Sciences), and the Bactrian Detachment
of the Central Asian archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology of
the Russian Academy of Sciences, led by N. D. Dvurechenskaya (PhD), have
been carrying out joint excavations on this mountain fortress. The excavations
have revealed a wealth of artefacts from the Early Hellenistic period. Apart
from pottery vessels, weapons, household items and objects of art, the
fortress of Uzundara also yielded unique numismatic material. In all, as many
as 141 antique coins, including 114 Hellenistic ones, were discovered during
seven seasons of excavation, from 2013 to 2017. The uniqueness of the coin
assemblage from Uzundara lies precisely in the excellent preservation, the
vast count and variety of coins found. On this account, to give publicity to this
particular numismatic collectionis one of the purposes for which this catalogue
has been started
