There is paucity of literature on internal security in Nigeria unlike other forms of security. Ni... more There is paucity of literature on internal security in Nigeria unlike other forms of security. Nigeria, a populous country in Africa has put in place certain numbers of security outfits to protect lives and properties of its citizenry yet the trend of criminality and security challenges are on the increase on daily bases. This study examines the security challenges in the country and assesses the role of internal security outfit. The Nigerian Police are the preeminent outfit saddled with maintenance of internal security in Nigeria. Ironically, the multiplicity of security outfit breeds inefficiency with the overlapping functions of security agencies. This study rests on observation and secondary data. The study concludes that holistic approach is required for efficiency of security agencies. The study therefore recommends collaborative efforts of security organizations in the country while there is the urgent need for modern crime fighting equipment couple with the intelligence gathering technique. More eligible men must be recruited into the existing security outfits to meet up with increasing Nigeria population for better performance.

The performance of this organ of government is to make or mar democracy of the nation. This study attempts to appraise the performance of Nigeria National Assembly between 2007 and 2011 in order to showcase their activities and impact on Nigeria’s growing democracy. The study concluded that act of legislation is a skill which requires learning and development. As one of the highest paid legislature in Africa, they have not excellently done well in enhancing the growth of Nigeria nascent democracy. The National Assembly needs to buckle up and have remarkable input.

It evaluates the problems and challenges affective the Nigerian Police Force with emphasis on crime management as well as other Policing functions. The objectives of the study were to assess the Performance of the NPF as well as to examine its effectiveness and efficiency in the area of crime control; to examine the public perception of policing in Nigeria; to examine the contemporary challenges facing the smooth operation of policing in a democratic dispensation; to assess strategies adopted by the NPF in the maintenance of security within the society. Data were sourced using primary and secondary technique. The secondary data involves books, Journals, online materials while the primary data sources involved the use of self-structured questionnaires administered randomly in which a total of (200) questionnaires were administered. However, only (170) questionnaires were retrieved. Data collected were analyzed through the use of descriptive as well as simple percentage method. Based on the findings of this study, it was observed that despite the fact that the Nigerian Police Force has performed well above average and it is still riddled with challenges which have militated against its performance in the area of crime management and civil control, also the public perception of the Force is still at a negative standpoint. The paper is concluded on the basis that the government should provide funding as well as other necessary infrastructures to the Nigerian Police force in other to enhance the institutions performance in crime management, and also create a viable environment of understanding between the Nigerian Police Force and the general public so as to improve police performance.
