It means that environment has a strong influence in teaching and learning processes, because effective teaching can only take place in an environment that is organized, motivating and peaceful. The environment where teaching and learning in vocational and technical education takes place is an important educational factor that needs to be considered by everyone concerned, the environment needs adequate attention in the area of infrastructural facilities, and made conducive for learning

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Factors Affecting the Effective Teaching and Learnin... more The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Factors Affecting the Effective Teaching and Learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses in Nigerian Universities. The research work was limited to two selected State Universities and addressed the following research questions: Does lack of students’ interest affect the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses in Nigerian Universities? Do staff training and retention, staff situation and brain drain affect the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses in Nigerian Universities?, and do funding and facilities affect the effective teaching and learning of Vocational and Technical Education courses in Nigerian Universities? respectively, making up a total of 30 items in the questionnaire was used for data collection. The population of the study is 90 comprising of 10 Lecturers and 80 students from the two State Universities in Ondo and Ekiti States respectively. Purposeful and sampling technique was used to select all the 10 Lecturers and random sampling technique was used to select 80 students. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire. The questionnaire was content and faced validated by the researcher’s supervisor. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument which yielded 0.902. The researcher administered the questionnaire on the Lecturers and students personally in the selected Universities. Mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the research questions while t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed among others that there are shortage of professional and experienced Lecturers, Lecturers were not provided with enough allowance and they were not motivated, demonstration employed by Vocational and Technical Education technologists were poor, dilapidated infrastructural facilities, poor societal attitude towards Vocational and Technical Education and parents perception that Vocational and Technical Education is for dull and unintelligent students. Hence it was recommended among others that Government should provide the necessary equipments, machines, facilities and infrastructure needed in the Effective Teaching and Learning of Vocational and Technical Education and that skills and exercises selected by the VTE Lecturers to teach should be technologically relevant and at the same time meaningful to the learners in reference to the needs of the community. It is evident that possession of proficient skill in ones career field is basic to motivation to learn and lack of knowledge of this skill kills interest on the part of students.
