Methods: This cross-sectional study included 2,057 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years from the city of Aracaju, Northeastern Brazil. We analyzed the level of physical activity, consumption of fruits and vegetables by standardized and validated questionnaires. The control variables were sex, age, socioeconomic status, maternal education, alcohol consumption and smoking. For data analysis, univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The prevalence of low levels of physical activity was 81.9%; the inadequate consumption of fruits ocurred in 79.1% and the inadequate consumption of vegetables in 90.6%. Adolescents who consumed few fruits daily had an increase in 40% of chance of being insufficiently active and, for those who consumed few vegetable's the likelihood of being insufficiently active was 50% higher, compared to those who had adequate intake of these foods. Conclusions: Low levels of physical activity were associated with inadequate fruit and vegetable intake among adolescents in a city in northeastern Brazil. These findings suggest that insufficiently active adolescents have other unhealthy behaviors that may increase the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.

Sample of convenience was used to select seventy five female undergraduates of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife Nigeria with mean age of 22.92 +3.02 years. Participants weight was measured under water using Hydrostatic weighing equipment. Skinfold was measured at chest, mid axilla, triceps, sub scapular, abdomen, supra iliac, mid thigh, and biceps. Body density (BD) was calculated using underwater weight and anthropometric equations from Behnke and Wilmore, Durning and Wormsley, Jackson et al, Parizkova, Pollock et al, Sloan et al, and Jackson and Pollock. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The result showed that BD from equation of Pollock et al, Jackson et al, Sloan, and Jackson and Pollock, were not significantly different from BD from underwater weighing ( p < .001). Body density by underwater weighing was also found to have negative significant relationship with Body mass index (r = -.760), waist circumference (r = -.402) and hip circumference ( r =-.472). It could be concluded that the equations by these authors Pollock et al, Jackson et al, Sloan, and Jackson and Pollock were valid for estimating BD and percent body fat of Nigerian women. Key Words : Body Density, Underwater weighing, Skinfold, waist circumference, hip circumference, Body mass index

Introduction: Anterior knee pain can be chronic sequelae of intramedullary nailing of the tibia. ... more Introduction: Anterior knee pain can be chronic sequelae of intramedullary nailing of the tibia. Several causes have been identified; no single reason can fully explain the occurrence. We, therefore, set out to find the rate of anterior knee pain in our practice and if any relationship exists between the anterior knee pain and extensor muscle strength. Methodology: A total of 72 knees in 36 patients with no prior history of knee pain, but had unilateral tibiofibular fracture, who had internal fixation with interlocking intramedullary nailing done and were followed up for at least 1 year were recruited into the study. The tension generated on extension of the knee against a resistance using tensiometer was measured in Newton. The ranges of motion of the knees were documented, as well as Lysholm score which measures activities and document the presence and limitation caused by anterior knee pain. Results: A total of 36 patients with 72 knees were studied. Anterior knee pain occurred in 7 (19.4%) patients in this study. There was no statistically significant relationship between the force of tension (N) generated in the extensor in patients with anterior knee pain compared with those without knee pain (158.43 ± 49.35, 189.54 ± 74.63, P = 0.304). There was, however, a significant statistical relationship between the mean Lysholm score of the operated and unoperated knee (P = 0.042). Conclusion: Anterior knee pain rate was 19.4% in our series and no statistical association exists between the extensor strength and occurrence of anterior knee pain.

The 56 subjects that completed the study were randomly assigned into stabilization in prone (SIP) (n= 19), stabilization in supine (SIS) (n= 20), and prone and supine (SIPS) position (n= 17) groups. Subjects in all the groups received infrared radiation for 15 min and kneading massage at the low back region. Subjects in SIP, SIS, and SIPS groups received stabilization exercise in prone lying, supine lying and combination of both positions respectively. Treatment was applied twice weekly for eight weeks. PI and FD level of each subject were measured at baseline, 4th and 8th week of the treatment sessions. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The alpha level was set at P < 0.05. Within group comparison indicated that PI and FD at the 4th and 8th week were significantly reduced (P< 0.001) when compared with baseline in all the three groups. However, the result showed that there was no significant difference in the PI and FD at the 8th week (P> 0.05) of the treatment sessions across the three groups when compared. It can be concluded that stabilization exercises carried out in prone, supine and combination of the two positions were equally effective in managing pain and disability of patients with NSCLBP. However, no position was superior to the other.

Materials and Methods: Eight schools were selected randomly; from each school, 100 students were consecutively selected amounting to 800 participants for the study. LBP questionnaire from a study of Chiwaridzo and Naidoo was adopted for the research. The Likert scale questionnaire was administered to each participant and collected as soon as it was completed. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Alpha level was set at 0.05. Results: The results showed that 710 questionnaires, which were 88.7% of the total, were analysable. More than 46% of the participants recorded LBP in the last 1 year. There was significant association between occurrence of LBP and each of family history of LBP (χ[2] = 13.357, P = 0.000), fathers' occupation (χ[2] = 13.357, P = 0.000) and education (χ[2] = 13.357, P = 0.000); mothers' occupation (χ[2] = 13.357, P = 0.000) and education (χ[2] = 13.357, P = 0.000). Prediction equation for the occurrence of LBP is: Y = K + B (Occupation) + C (Education) + D (LBP in the family). The r[2] value was 0.473 interpreting that the percentage contribution of these factors to the prediction of LBP among adolescents was 47.3%. Conclusion: The study showed that prevalence of pain at low back was 46% among 10–14 years' adolescents. Some parental sociodemographic variables may contribute to the occurrence of LBP among adolescents.
