Adam Magennis, who is a traditional owner, has been engaged to ensure that cultural values within the Shire are managed with both the aspirations of the traditional owners and relevant legislative requirements in mind. This paper outlines the impetus for the development of this role, outlines an operational model, and describes some of the positive outcomes already achieved, including the first Cultural Heritage Management Plan to be prepared internally by a local government authority under the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
