Land surface temperature (LST) fluctuation is a global problem that is responsible for regional a... more Land surface temperature (LST) fluctuation is a global problem that is responsible for regional and global climate change. Abnormal LST causes drought, depletion of ozone layers, skin and lung diseases and also affect crops production. Spatial distribution of surface temperature has become an issue especially to less developed countries with little or absent of temperature stations to report daily or monthly temperature of the area. This study utilized remote sensing approach to estimate land surface temperature, NDVI and GNDVI of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. The study was conducted using Landsat imageries of two epochs (1990 and 2017) which was downloaded using path 188 and row 57. The images were converted from DN to TOA radiance using algorithm specified in the Landsat user's guide. The highest estimated LST in 1990 and 2017 map was 28.77°C and 29.37°C. Also, in 1990 the highest LST was recorded in Diobu and part of Old Port Harcourt Township while in 2017 maximum temperature extended from Diobu to Trans-amadi. The increase LST was due to urbanization and industrialization in the city. The study observed mean difference between estimated LST of 1990 and 2017 and that observed by NIMET as 1.24°C and 2.91°C respectively. There was positive correlation coefficient of 0.09 and 0.4 between LST against NDVI in 1990 and in 2017 and between LST against GNDVI of 0.19 and 0.30 was also observed in both years. This study justified that remote sensing and GIS can be used to derive LST which can be used for environmental studies and research purposes. For further study, LST should be estimated in all the state and their values validate with in-situ observations.

It is also a factor of climate change. Flash flood is a type of flood that occurs within few hours of intensive precipitation. It poses serious threat to urban areas, particularly in less developed countries. Geospatial technology has been very useful in mapping spatial extent and quantified damages associated with flash flood events. Proximity analysis and AHP has been widely utilized in modeling flash flood vulnerable zones. Little was known about MCA ranking method which is considered appropriate for few parameters in making complex decisions. This study utilized MCA ranking method to analyzed flash flood risk within Ntawogba Creek, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Rainfall, slope model, impervious surface and distance to river were used in the decision making. The datasets were processed into common spatial referenced system. Each criterion was scaled from 5 to 1, with 5 being very high risk and 1 very low risk area. Weights were assigned to the criteria based on the importance, with higher weight to criterion that is more important in the decision making process. The weights are; distance to water channel 48, impervious surface 25, slope 22 and rainfall 5. The results obtained showed area of 93.0ha as very high flash flood risk representing 6% of the area. This zone was located along Ntawogba Creek and on major roads. Total area of high risk zone was 864.1ha representing 56%, moderate risk and low risk zone was 452.2ha and 134.7ha with 29.3 5 and 8.7% respectively. For further study, drainage density and soil infiltration should be included in the flash flood risk analysis.

Solid waste also releases offensive odours into the environment. To minimize these challenges, the knowledge of the spatial distribution of solid wastes is essential in the management plan of waste collection and disposal. The spatial distribution of wastes location also assisted in determining it impact on land use/ land cover such as wetlands, water body, built-up, road network in the study area. The Port Harcourt city, Rivers State, Nigeria has been under intense pressure due to increase population from within and outside the state. The increase in population, industrial and economic activities in the area has contributed to the increase in the quantity of daily generated solid wastes in the city, which required prompt planning to regulate waste related diseases. This study utilized Landsat satellite image of year 2000, dump site location obtained with hand held GPS in UTM zone 32N as input datasets, and ArcGIS 10.1 (vector software), and ENVI 5.0 (raster software) was used to performed the analysis. The Landsat image was classified into four (4) land use/ cover types; water body, wetlands, built-up, and vegetation. The image classification method adopted was maximum likelihood classification. The study applied buffer analysis (150m and 1000m buffer zones) and spatial query from ArcGIS to determine the impact of dump site locations on land use/ land cover. The results of the buffer analysis perform on 150m buffer zones of the three dump sites shows that six road layers were within this buffer zone. Similarly, 1000m buffer zone was query on wetlands, water body, built-up, and road layers, the results indicated that 174 wetlands polygons, 36 water body polygons, 42 built-up polygons, and 335 roads network were affected by the solid wastes dump sites location. The study discovered that the location of dump sites does not meet the required standard from road, built-up areas, water body, and wetlands and as such the inhabitants of the affected locations will be prone to solid wastes related diseases. It is therefore recommended that integrated approach on solid wastes management including collection, disposal, and processing should be adapted in the state, to minimized waste pollution.
