Perceptual image quality assessment (IQA) and sparse signal representation have recently emerged ... more Perceptual image quality assessment (IQA) and sparse signal representation have recently emerged as high-impact research topics in the field of image processing. Here we make one of the first attempts to incorporate the structural similarity (SSIM) index, a promising IQA measure, into the framework of optimal sparse signal representation and approximation. In particular, we introduce a novel image denoising scheme where a modified orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is proposed for finding the best sparse coefficient vector in maximum-SSIM sense for a given set of linearly independent atoms. Furthermore, a gradient descent algorithm is developed to achieve SSIM-optimal compromise in combining the input and sparse dictionary reconstructed images. Our experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better SSIM performance and provide better visual quality than least square optimal denoising methods.

The objective of these methods is to use sparsity prior of the underlying signal in terms of some dictionary and achieve optimal performance in terms of mean-squared error, a metric that has been widely criticized in the literature due to its poor performance as a visual quality predictor. In this work, we make one of the first attempts to employ structural similarity (SSIM) index, a more accurate perceptual image measure, by incorporating it into the framework of sparse signal representation and approximation. Specifically, the proposed optimization problem solves for coefficients with minimum L 0 norm and maximum SSIM index value. Furthermore, a gradient descent algorithm is developed to achieve SSIM-optimal compromise in combining the input and sparse dictionary reconstructed images. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed method by using image denoising and super-resolution methods as examples. Our experimental results show that the proposed SSIM-based sparse representation algorithm achieves better SSIM performance and better visual quality than the corresponding least square-based method.

The coupled nonlinear partial differential equations of the problem are simplified with the help of similarity transformations and the resulting coupled nonlinear differential equations are solved analytically by homotopy analysis method (HAM). The features of the flow phenomena, inertia, heat transfer, and nanoparticles are analyzed and discussed.

The governing equations of the couple stress fluid model for velocity, temperature and nanoparticle profiles are given as part of the boundary layer approach. The nonlinear partial differential equations are simplified by using similar transformations. The analytical solutions of simplified equations are found using the homotopy analysis method. The convergence of the HAM solutions is discussed by plotting -curves and also through homotopy padé approximation. The physical features of pertinent parameters are discussed through graphs.

This paper presents the first measurement of Single Event Upsets (SEUs) in the configuration memo... more This paper presents the first measurement of Single Event Upsets (SEUs) in the configuration memory of the readout control FPGA of the ALICE Time Projection Chamber. The measurements have been performed during pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √ S = 7 TeV in the period from May to August 2011. A linear dependence was observed between the number of SEUs and the luminosity seen by ALICE. In addition the spatial distribution of SEUs have been analysed for the 216 FPGA installed on the two end-plates of the TPC detector.

Three-dimensional visualization of neuron structure could help to facilitate deeper understanding of neuron and its models. An accurate neuron model could aid understanding of brain's functionalities, diagnosis and knowledge of entire nervous system. Existing neuron models have been found to be defective in the aspect of realism. Whereas in the actual biological neuron, there is continuous growth as the soma extending to the axon and the dendrite; but, the current neuron visualization models present it as disjointed segments that has greatly mediated effective realism. In this research, a new reconstruction model comprising of the Bounding Cylinder, Curve Interpolation and Gouraud Shading is proposed to visualize neuron model in order to improve realism. Extreme expressions are really type of emotional expressions that are basically stimulated throug... more Extreme expressions are really type of emotional expressions that are basically stimulated through the strong emotion. An example of those extreme expression is satisfied through tears. So to be able to provide these types of features; additional elements like fluid mechanism (particle system) plus some of physics techniques like (SPH) are introduced. The fusion of facile animation with SPH exhibits promising results. Accordingly, proposed fluid technique using facial animation is the real tenor for this research to get the complex expression, like laugh, smile, cry (tears emergence) or the sadness until cry strongly, as an extreme expression classification that's happens on the human face in some cases.
This paper presents fuzzy logic in computer graphics to generate soft shadows in virtual environm... more This paper presents fuzzy logic in computer graphics to generate soft shadows in virtual environments and augmented reality. A very short overview on hard shadow generation is introduced. Shadow volume which is a conventional technique to create hard shadow is the base algorithm for our approach to show hard shadows in crisp set. A new technique with help of shadow maps for generating soft shadows using fuzzy logic is used. Fuzzy logic could change the concept of soft shadows into mathematically simple forms. Conversion of the soft shadows into fuzzy logic could change some parts of complex calculation to a simple physical based approach for increasing the speed of rendering. ARToolkit is used for geometric tracking as well as stencil buffer. A credible soft shadow is produced by splitting the wide light source into many parts.
