Timis, the most extensive of the Romanian counties, is the western gate of the country from where a lot of people travel abroad. The aim of this study is to overview all the imported cases of malaria diagnosed in our county and to describe two recent severe cases. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed both the medical records of 28 malaria patients treated between 1974 and 2007 at Victor Babes Hospital of Infectious Disease from Timisoara, Romania, and the results of 6 blood examinations performed in the last decade in the parasitological laboratory of Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Timisoara. A comparison between the two recent severe cases was made, emphasizing on the clinical aspects, complications and the laboratory test results. Results: Most of the patients (55.38%) were in the age group of 20-29 years; 85.71% of the patients were males; Plasmodium falciparum was found in 75% of the cases. Conclusions: Findings of our study have shown that P. falciparum is the main malaria species in Timis County, outlining the difficulties in the diagnosis and management of the imported cases.

Imported cases of schistosomiasis are reported in nonendemic regions due to an increased number of travelers to affected geographical areas. The present case report aimed to emphasize the importance of a correct history of a patient, including information regarding travel history and its consequences, and to overview the evolution of a tropical disease diagnosed rarely in Romania. Materials and methods: Retrospective analysis of a single case of imported schistosomiasis diagnosed in Timisoara, Romania. Result: A 25-year old male patient had traveled and worked abroad for a long period of time in tropical areas in Asia and South America (Brazil). The clinical pattern at admission to hospital included fever and diarrhea with multiple liquid stools with mucus. Physical examination was normal. Routine laboratory tests revealed an increased number of leucocytes.

The data were collected from the Veterinary Public Health Department of Timis County. A total of 5,586,431 domestic pigs on farms, 609,325 pigs in private households, and 823 wild boars were examined during the study period. The results indicated that 681 domestic pigs (0.01%) on farms and 407 pigs in private households (0.07%) were found to be infected with Trichinella. Regarding wild boars, infection was detected in only 4 animals (0.5%). Although no infected animals have recently been identified during routine examinations (2009-2011), human outbreaks continue to occur yearly, and the main factors for these include improper handling by the population.

Trichinellosis, a parasitic zoonosis caused by the ingestion of inadequately cooked pork containi... more Trichinellosis, a parasitic zoonosis caused by the ingestion of inadequately cooked pork containing Trichinella larvae, has been a serious health problem in Timis, the largest of the Romanian counties. The authors conducted a survey on trichinellosis in children from Timis County, emphasising epidemiological aspects. Medical records from 106 children who were hospitalised at the Victor Babes Infectious Diseases Hospital in Timisoara from 1990 to 2006 were investigated. Children affected by trichinellosis were predominantly in the 10- to 14-year-old age group (34.9%). Most patients (59.43%) were inhabitants of urban areas and 59.43% of cases were males. Winter was the season when the number of cases peaked (76.42%). The highest prevalence of disease (18.87%) was recorded in 1994. For 38.68% of the patients, eosinophilia ranged between 10% and 20%. The length of hospitalisation ranged from 8 to 14 days in 50.94% of cases. In recent years, human trichinellosis has decreased in Timis Co...

A rare case of renal hydatidosis in a child with congenital solitary kidney

We report a case presenting this extremely rare combination and having a favorable outcome. The diagnosis was confirmed based on an association of imagistic techniques and positive serology. The case was managed using a minimal invasive surgical technique (PAIR) that reduced the operative risks. Additionally, an antihelminthic agent (albendazole) was administered. To our knowledge, this is the first case with such comorbidity and treated through percutaneous approach.

Pulmonary amoebiasis, the second most common extraintestinal manifestation of infection, occurs in 2%-3% of patients with invasive amoebiasis. The present clinical report aims to present a single case of a rare diagnosed parasitic disease in Romania and to emphasize the difficulties encounted while attempting to establish the correct diagnosis and to completely cure the patient. Methodology: Retrospective analysis of all medical records of a patient hospitalized at Victor Babes Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Timisoara, Romania, and diagnosed with pulmonary amoebiasis. Results and Conclusions: The disease debuted in 1996 with intestinal symptomatology and was not diagnosed at that time. Thus evolution continued for another five years ending with the invasion of the lung. Differential diagnosis with a bacterial abscess, tuberculous abscess, and neoplastic disease were considered. A routine microscopic examination of the sputum finally clarified the diagnosis during a second hospitalization pointing out the importance of collaboration between the infectious disease clinicians and parasitologists.

Giant pulmonary and hepatic hydatid cysts in a child

We describe an interesting paediatric case of an eight-year old boy from a rural region presenting with a both giant and life-threatening pulmonary cyst (that was successfully managed) and a hepatic cyst. Noteworthy are the negative consequences of this disorder on children's health and development as a result of prolonged hospitalizations, surgical interventions and chemotherapy.
