Coiled Tubing technology may not be the choice for drilling large diameter vertical holes, but may be the best technology for managing drilling condition within the reservoir. There has been an increasing use of Coiled Tubing technology for ‘side tracking' and ‘hole extension' would tend to support this belief. Along with the evolution in Coiled Tubing drilling (CTD), there has been a growing acceptance of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD). Hence the process of using this technology at a commercial level has begun. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficiency of implementing Coiled Tubing technology with MPD conditions while drilling around a salt dome. The paper proposes an example case study of drilling a 3-Dimensional well around a salt dome tracing two oil pockets at two different depths on flanks of the salt dome. It includes a detailed well plan and the challenges faced like fluid selection, BHP maintenance, complications in steering, and stress considerations around the salt dome and the solutions for the same. The paper also discusses the application of CTD and MPD in combating loss circulation, hole instability problems. It gives the comparison of drilling through a salt dome and drilling around it and the advantages of the latter.
