Kang (1998) has delineated one of such strategic patterns uniquely available for multiparty participation, which she calls “triadic exchange.” A triadic exchange is recognized when a speaker addresses a mediating addressee (“Mediator”) to communicate a message to another co-present addressee(s), or “Target.” See Figure 1 for illustration. This study examines the use of quotations in Japanese by political figures when they speak in a p... more This study examines the use of quotations in Japanese by political figures when they speak in a public arena, such as open debates, street speeches, or on political affairs television programs. The study first discusses the pragma-linguistic complexity involved in quotation patterns in Japanese. Adopting Kamada (2000)'s theoretical approach to quotation patterns in Japanese, I argue that the direct-indirect dichotomy characterizing English cannot account for the Japanese data. The degrees of (a) perspective taken by the speaker themselves in quoting, as illustrated by deictic expressions, and (b) "interactiveness" the speaker wants to integrate into the quotation via modality usage seem to create a continuous reported-ness pattern.
When are the relevant moments for "interculturality"? Why do participants invoke, accept, and col... more When are the relevant moments for "interculturality"? Why do participants invoke, accept, and collaboratively develop them? When do they resist them? This study explores these questions by examining the case of foreign graduate students in Japan. It examines a series of group discussions held for a graduate seminar course in a Japanese university. The analysis of the discourse data shows that while moments of interculturality repeatedly appeared in their talk, these moments were invoked in order for the speakers to pursue trans-cultural social purposes. Put another way, while non-Japanese students invoked their foreign-ness in their talk, they did so en passant, not as an ultimate goal.1

This case study explores the linguistic lives of foreign exchange students in contemporary Japan.... more This case study explores the linguistic lives of foreign exchange students in contemporary Japan. Many come from multilingual social contexts in their own country, and they must then navigate an unfamiliar multilingual linguistic landscape in Japan. This investigation employs a CA-informed microanalysis of interactional data (audio recordings of “off task” interaction among participants), qualitative sociolinguistic analysis on several sets of semi-structured interviews with the exchange students), and analysis of ethnographic information obtained through participatory observation of students’ daily campus life. Regardless of the participants’ mother tongue, or their having opportunities to use other shared languages such as German or Putonghua, it turns out that Japanese and English are the lingua francas (LFs) most frequently used. At least three types of characteristics in their use of these two languages are identified: insertive use of English as a LF in Japanese as LF talk; a shift from English as LF to Japanese when participants speak English with Japanese local students and experience problems, and a preference for using Japanese as a LF, due to the foreign students’ strong determination to “speak the target language” of their learning.

Arguing involves inter-activities such as making claims, disagreeing with claims, and countering disagreements. The nature of an argument has been also analyzed in the frame of disputing (Brenneis, 1988; Kotthoff, 1993) and conflict talk (Grimshaw, 1990). Argument is defined as “a conversation or discussion in which two or more people disagree, often angrily” (Oxford English Dictionary, 1999). As we see from the definition here, the terms such as “disagreement” and “agreement” are very closely related as components that shape an argument. Arguing involves the management of competing claims; the speakers must make use of the conversational resources available to them to display and manage disagreement.
