Hirakawa intended to write a handbook for Japanese students of Buddhism that presented the information derived from Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, and (to a lesser degree) Tibetan sources in a comprehensive and encompassing way. Such enterprise is daunting by any standards, and has not been undertaken since Etienne Lamotte, Historic du bouddhisme indien (Louvain, 1958; translated as History of Indian Buddhism [Louvain, 1988]), which, however, never proceeded beyond the first volume. The present volume covers a period beginning with the historical Buddha and ending with the inception of the Mahayana. Its first part discusses the life of the Buddha, the Buddhist doctrine, the organization of the sangha, the formation of the canon, and the developments under the reign of Asoka. Its second part is devoted to the treatment of Nikdya Buddhism, i.e., the branching of early Buddhism into eighteen or more "schools" of thought and practice. Its last part explores the development of the Buddhist sangha after Asoka, and the events and ideas resulting in the rise of Mahayana.
