Summary

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a final flash from the past, sometimes to a fault, but the feeling of traveling back to a simpler time when games didn’t have to be balanced or competitive to be fun is still a good one.

Dragon Ball’s Best, Worst and Weirdest Video Games of All Time

1 year, 2 months - Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero is the most successful Dragon Ball game to date, which is saying something when you consider how many games have been made about Goku, Vegeta, and company. Let’s take a crash course of the history of how Akira Toriyama’s beloved manga-turned-anime has inspired some incredibly innovative games, as well as quite a few terrible ones, from the Famicom tie-ins released shortly after the original Dragon Ball began airing in Japan, up through the golden age of sixteen-bit fighting games, and the renaissance of DBZ following its meteoric rise in popularity in the United States. Dragon Ball has been gamified in every possible genre, like card battlers, from the proto-deck builder Daimao Fukkatsu to the more recent Dragon Ball Heroes. We’ve had DBZ RPGs of all kinds, from the classic Gokuden series, to the forgotten Game Boy Color gem Legendary Super Warriors, up until the sprawling open-world(ish) Kakarot. Of course, there’s been no shortage of fighting games, from Butoden to Ultimate Battle 22 to Taiketsu to the Dragon Ball Sparking (AKA Tenkaichi Budokai) series to MMOs like Dragon Ball Online and Xenoverse, beat-em ups like Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure, and even a few very weird FMV games like The Plan To Eradicate The Saiyans and Goku’s World, exclusive to a couple of ill-fated Bandai devices, the Playdia and the Terebikko. Considering Dragon Ball’s larger-than-life subject matter, with its countless transformations, fusions, and other increases in power, it’s not the easiest property to adapt into a balanced gaming experience, but that hasn’t stopped developers from trying - and occasionally succeeding - to capture the charm and thrills of the beloved shonen anime. What kinds of games will Dragon Ball Daima inspire? Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and company have been shrunken down and sent off on new magical adventures, and given the series’ long relationship with video games, it’s only a matter of time before these new stories get the same treatment - aside from DLC for Xenoverse 2, Kakarot, Fighterz, and/or Sparking Zero.
