Il presente volume ospita i contributi degli studiosi (alcuni dei maggiori esperti del Furioso, specialisti di altre aree e giovani ricercatori) che hanno partecipato al convegno internazionale di Erlangen-Norimberga, svoltosi al termine dell'intensa stagione di studi fiorita in occasione del quinto centenario della prima edizione del poema. Il libro è diviso in due parti: la prima indaga alcune centrali questioni interpretative (come il rapporto tra finzione e realtà storica, l'ironia, il tema della saggezza o quello delle strutture genealogiche, il confronto con autori quali Luciano, Dante, Boiardo e altri, la presenza del modello teatrale, la modernità del Furioso) e propone nuove prospettive di lettura; la seconda esplora percorsi che si snodano in ambiti diversi (letterario, critico, figurativo e musicale) e in vari Paesi europei, attraversando la ricchissima storia delle «letture» (dalla ricezione letteraria, critica o ludica nel Rinascimento alla ricodifica operistica, dalla pittura sette e ottocentesca alle letture di Stendhal e dei romantici tedeschi, fino a disamine sull'ottava e sulle recitazioni orali) di questo inesauribile poema.

Since the earliest reception of the Orlando Furioso, the episodes Ariosto set in and around the B... more Since the earliest reception of the Orlando Furioso, the episodes Ariosto set in and around the British Isles have fascinated readers and inspired iconic artistic depictions. This chapter explores these episodes, focusing on Ariosto’s manipulation of the traditional chivalric seascape, descriptions of the sea and shipwrecks, on places and toponyms as producers of meaning in the British Isles landscapes, and on the 1532 addition of the episode centred on Olimpia, which can be considered a laboratory of narrative techniques, stylistic choices, and geospatial innovation.

Deeply embedded in these works is the notion that they were intended to be heard: there is something musical about Homer’s use of language and a vivid quality to his images that transcends the written page to create a theatrical experience for the listener. Indeed, it is precisely the theatrical quality of the poems that would inspire later interpreters to cast the Odyssey and the Iliad in a host of other media-novels, plays, poems, paintings, and even that most elaborate of all art forms, opera, exemplified by no less a work than Monteverdi’s Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria. In Performing Homer: The Voyage of Ulysses from Epic to Opera, scholars in classics, drama, Italian literature, art history, and musicology explore the journey of Homer’s Odyssey from ancient to modern times. The book traces the reception of the Odyssey through the Italian humanist sources—from Dante, Petrarch, and Ariosto—to the treatment of the tale not only by Monteverdi but also such composers as Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Gluck, and Alessandro Scarlatti, and the dramatic and poetic traditions thereafter by such modern writers as Derek Walcott and Margaret Atwood.
