We explore the history of use of several key firearms, including the Istinggar, Terakol, Pemuras, Lela, and Bedil, which played pivotal roles in the warfare strategies and martial culture of the Malay peoples. Through an analysis of historical texts, archaeological findings, and contemporary accounts, we trace the origins of these weapons and their technological advancements over time. The Istinggar, a long musket influenced by Portuguese firearms, exemplifies the fusion of local craftsmanship with foreign technology. The Terakol, a smaller, easily maneuverable hand cannon, highlights the adaptability of Malay society to changing warfare tactics. The Pemuras, an early form of matchlock rifle, signifies the introduction of precision in Malay arsenals. Meanwhile, the Lela and Bedil, types of cannons, demonstrate the Malay expertise in casting and metallurgy, essential for larger-scale engagements. This study not only sheds light on the technological sophistication of ancient Malay arms but also underscores their significance in the socio-political dynamics of Southeast Asia. Ultimately, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the historical significance of Malay arms in shaping the martial heritage and cultural identity of the region.
