Creating a Synthetic Population: A Comparison of Tools

Activity based travel demand modelling requires microdata of population at household and person l... more Activity based travel demand modelling requires microdata of population at household and person level as a key input. Unfortunately due to privacy constraints, such data is often not available. To fulfil this lack of data, population can be synthesised to represent actual demographics of study area as per population census. This paper presents the process of creating a synthetic population for a metropolis for the case of Greater Melbourne using 2011 Population Census. Microdata was created for households and persons in Greater Melbourne at statistical area level 1 (SA1). PopSynWin (developed by University of Illinois at Chicago in 2008), which is based on Iterative Proportional Fitting (IPF) algorithm, and PopGen (Population Generator, developed by Arizona State University in 2009), which is based on Iterative Proportional Update (IPU) algorithm, were used as tools for this purpose, generating two different synthetic populations. Microdata within these synthetic populations were aggregated to validate against actual aggregate census data to evaluate its representativeness to original population. Finally, both the generated populations were compared to use the more accurate of them for further work.

Personal transportation modes such as bikes and cars have advantage in terms of flexibility and c... more Personal transportation modes such as bikes and cars have advantage in terms of flexibility and convenience but they are very costly, require parking space and also contribute significantly to congestion of traffic streets. Public mode of transportation such as buses, trams and trains operate at fixed schedules and fixed routes that may not match the traveler’s demand. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are expensive for the user and may not be available when required. A Demand Responsive
Transport System (DRTS) provides flexible point-to-point service based on casual requests. It operates at flexible routes and it does not have pre-defined schedules. It shares existing infrastructure and offers shared transport services, hence its fares are expected to be cheap. Before
deploying a DRTS testing its design parameters, optimization, and economic feasibility is required. For this reason this paper provides a feasibility analysis of the capacity of the open-source software SUMO to simulate DRTS.

This paper involves study and analysis of various Bus Priority Measures in terms of change in delay with respect to normal intersection for the buses and also for whole traffic flow (including buses and all other vehicles) with the help of results of VISSIM simulation software for various volumes of traffic flow. These measures can be applied to give buses priority to make them a more attractive alternative to the private vehicles and reducing road congestion.

Traffic congestion characterizes most metropolitan areas and demand is recurrently too large for ... more Traffic congestion characterizes most metropolitan areas and demand is recurrently too large for the actual capacity of the roads. Signalized intersections along these roadways are often overcapacity during peak hours. So improvement at intersection may help to reduce the congestion in traffic. This goal, in respect of road transport, can be attained by encouraging public transport modes like buses. As capacity of buses is much higher than all other passenger vehicles, giving buses priority over other vehicles would definitely result in higher flow in terms of passengers. This paper involves study and analysis of various bus priority measures employing application of median bus lanes in terms of change in delay with respect to normal intersection for the buses and also for whole traffic flow (including buses and all other vehicles). Analysis is done using VISSIM simulation software for various volumes (vehicles/hour) of traffic flow.
