An effort has also been made to give suggestions regarding the dimensions of the door model of submarine for further improvements. This will be helpful to the company to fabricate and also to show the results of the analysis to prospective customers. Purpose of the analysis is detect any flaws in the design stage can be identified and corrected in the analysis stage. Analysis stage acts as a prototype building stage where in the original is modeled and analyzed. The stress developed can be understood and suitably reduced by increasing or decreasing the dimensions, using a better material. The stress distribution can be understood and the maximum and minimum stress acting on the material can be estimated. In this project an effort has been made to carry out the analysis of “submarine door mechanism”. The project requires a basic knowledge of the analysis software and the working of t...

Abstract In automotive suspension, a control arm is a hinged suspension link between the chassis ... more Abstract In automotive suspension, a control arm is a hinged suspension link between the chassis and the suspension or hub that carries the wheel. The chassis end of a control arm usually rubber busing, is attached by a single pivot. It controls the position of the tyre end in only a single degree of freedom, maintaining the radial distance from the chassis mount. The single bushing does not control the arm from moving back and forth; this motion is constrained by a separate link or radius rod. Wishbones are triangular and have two widely spaced chassis bearings, which constrain the tyre end of the wishbone from moving back and forth, controlling two degrees of freedom, and without requiring additional links. Most control arms form the lower link of a suspension with few designs using them as the upper link, usually with a lower wishbone. The lower arm should be sturdy, in many cases reported by the users of a particular vehicle, fluttering noise heard over the humps. This paper calculates the forces acting on the lower arm of a four-wheeler with critical loading conditions as the Finite Element Analysis carried for the McPherson type suspension system. The static analysis performed to determine the location of maximum deflection and stress distribution while the vehicle is stationary and moving over the hump at different speeds. The free-free and constrained modal analysis performed on the suspension arm to find the natural frequency. The fatigue analysis performed to find the life of the arm. Further, by performing topological optimization leads to reduction in the weight.

For each response, a second-order polynomial model with high coefficient of determination (R 2) values ranging from 0.907 to 0.989 was developed using multiple linear regression analysis. The lack of significant difference between the experimental and predicted values proved the adequacy of response surface equations for describing the physical changes of emulsions. An increase of Arabic gum content in range and initial concentration of walnut oil were associated with high emulsion stability and minimum droplet size. It can be concluded that RSM can determine the most suitable formulation (3% w/w walnut oil and 9.62% w/w Arabic gum) to achieve the highest stability in a developed beverage emulsion based on walnut oil.

This paper presents a novel analysis method using linkogrpahs to identify the product features that have potential for innovation. While innovation can happen in materials, processes, a novel approach that of usability and utility has been adopted in this paper. Human factors behind usability that could enhance utility and identified as gaps using ‘linkogrpahs’. Linkogrpahs for these house old products have been drawn after disassembly. This human centered innovation method has potential to be and by MSMEs not only for improving design but also become a comparative measure of added value. Link index has potential to be used as an innovation metrics. This paper describes the analysis of these products using linkographs to identify the features for innovation.

Product samples are subjected to a detailed value analysis using link graphs. Link graphs are plotted based on qualitative aspects such as of usability, aesthetics, and ergonomics contributing features in a product assembly—as viewed from the product user’s point of view. Links and interconnections in terms of roles played and value added by qualitative factors are plotted and analyzed through one of the case study examples. Two versions of the designs are compared to enumerate the degree of innovation between the two. This index is proposed to be used as comparative measure of innovation for products belonging to the same functional category.

Design matrix focuses more on the measurement of innovation. The positive effects of introducing design matrix are validated through the final prototypes of the three design solutions. The first one involves users who are making different envelopes of various sizes. The second case study involves making of paper bags of standard size. The third case study involves the same set of users making office files. The paper attempts to validate the applicability of Design Matrix to three product case studies. At first glance the problems chosen are very simple but when seen from User’s point of view and by using a matrix—innovation is attempted to be measured. The authors contend that Innovation need not necessarily mean complex thinking or solving complex problems. The paper concludes with proposing future application of processes Design Matrix for complex products.

A variety of landing gear arrangements are used depending on the type and size of an aircraft. The most common type is the tri-cycle arrangement with one nose landing gear unit and two main landing gear units. Even during a normal landing operation heavy loads (equal to the weight of an aircraft) are to be absorbed by the landing gear. In turn joints are to be provided such that such heavy concentrated loads are first received by the airframe and subsequently diffused to the surrounding areas. Normally heavy concentrated loads are received through a lug joint. Therefore design of a lug joint against failure under static and fatigue loading conditions assumes importance in the development of an aircraft structure. This project deals with the design and analysis of a typical lug joint representative of a landing gear attachment of a small transport airplane. The design will ...

However, SMEs are slower to adopt innovation practices. An informal analysis after visiting a few SMEs it would become evident that the methods, practices and tools being used by SME’s are outdated. Having enormous potential and capability to enhance the quality of products in terms of cost, material, ergonomics, aesthetics, functionality etc. SMEs are not focusing on the need for innovation in line with the India’s strategy for ‘make in India’ thrust. There is need of tailor made method/ tools which can be best suited for SMEs that are in need of design as practicing tool. Our current study is the first step towards understanding of the available tools and techniques in product design with a frame work. The proposed frame work is expected to aid SME’s to quickly adopt new Design Thinking paradigm.

Innovating by Design is increasingly being reported in literature. While large and medium scale enterprises in India have resources to employ Design talent and practice innovation through design thinking, it is the micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs) that are in need of improving the quality of their products manufactured. This paper presents the processes of evaluating tools and techniques and mapping their suitability for MSMEs. This compilation & review of tools and techniques is intended to be developed further into an Innovation Decision matrix specifically aimed for use by MSMEs for designing their products
