Arthur Kleinman's research on chronic illness in Illness Narratives: Suffering, Healing and Human Condition has added a dimension to what earlier was just thought to be bodily dysfunction. Through his sessions with persons with chronic pain, he finds out that illness is essentially a social issue and is often shaped by culture. He presents bio-psycho-social model of disease. By using this model, the paper aims to examine how illness in Ammu points towards frustrations of desire in her as a woman in South Asia. The researcher wishes to explore Ammu's illness because through her illness, Roy has probably tried to unweave issues related to gender marginalization and its impact on the mental health of women in South Asia.
