Experimental Electronic Music
By the late 1980s, Depeche Mode had found global success—but the U.S. remained elusive. Despite support from stations like WLIR and KROQ, mainstream America hadn’t caught on. That changed with 1990’s Violator. Riding the momentum of Music for the Masses and Depeche Mode 101, the band hit a creative high, delivering the album that would launch them into true worldwide fame.
Perhaps yes, these are tracks from the dark 1980s, the apocalyptic Cold War mutual assured destruction never far away, but its musicality is hard to resist. I think I’m in for some further exploration of the Dotted realm.
The inclusion of Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence-era themes from the mid-90s is as brief and crisp as ever, with brittle and minimal techno extrusions rounding off the edges.
