First of all, thanks a lot for your in-depth answer to my previous comment (which I've noticed only now due to some lingering weirdness in pump.io notifications ;-)). I wonder, did you get specific negative / anti-canonical feedbacks to your video interview with Mark this time? Yes, I'm very well aware of vitriolic anti-canonical feedback in other occasion, but this time, at least the discussion here on pump.io seems decent enough. It's "just" people with different limit-of-compromise, as you put it, but they all seem quite supportive of the attempt of having a "more" free smartphone on the market, don't you think? I have had one or two push-backs elsewhere (hence the comment), but nothing here on the Pump pipes - my comments in the InfoWorld article were more a reflection of Mark's comments in the pre-interview discussion. I've not seen much comment at all here.
Simon, I have no interest in giving you a hard time about doing an interview with Shuttleworth, but Shuttleworth has been quite aggressive in his opposition of folks who do my type of work. He's called me a McCarthyist and "insecure in my beliefs" because I uphold copyleft, and he's said that Canonical's business plan is to violate the GPL on Linux. At OSCON, when I told him as smalltalk I'm working hard on non-profits, Shuttleworth told me that non-profit executives were overpaid and not held accountable enough like for-profit executives. The guy treats people who fight for software freedom with contempt. He can do what he wants, and I'm not condemning you for interviewing someone rich and famous, but he's not really focused on working for software freedom. I'm not sure I really understand that quote :-) But that picture is pretty powerful, though!
All three are heroes of mine for some things they've done. That doesn't mean I have to agree with them on every issue or that I look to them for "perfect role models" in other aspects of life.
Also I'm OK with them not buying cigarettes for their friends, no one should :-)

I checked the transcript of the video and Mark Shuttleworth definitely committed to Free software in the Edge phone:Simon: So what’s going to be in there? That’s all going to be free software?
Mark: Yes, we’ll ship this with Android and Ubuntu, no plans to put proprietary applications on it. We haven’t finalised the silicon selection so we’re looking at the next generation silicon from all major vendors. Simon, I want to believe you are right with regard to Mark Shuttleworth, i.e. that his ultimate goal is software freedom, and he is just making different strategic choices than others. But with them even making proprietary software in house (i.e. Ubuntu One, and Launchpad earlier) I have a hard time doing that.
