I just hope that there were no tragedies.20 students were held hostage, he shot his teacher (died) and 2 policemen (one died).
Authorities say the shooter got a small-caliber pistol and a carbine rifle from his father.

I'm tired of the "cult of victory" surrounding World War II. Tired of this unhealthy view of history, full of taboos, where any attempts of free discussion will be punished with accusations of offending veterans. And it's not important how veterans think, more important is how they should think.
World War II is the exception in history, where "what if"s result in rehabilitating fascism. I can ask people what, do they think, would happen if, say, Jesus wasn't crucified, the Roman empire didn't fall, or the Winter Palace revolt didn't happen. But God save me from having the inhumanity to ask what would happen, if Leningrad was surrendered to the Germans! Then, under the mask of a curious historian, I'll be discovered as an extremistfascistwhoshouldbeputinprisonforfiveyears.
People, don't attack those who don't share your evaluation of historic events. Better remove the taboo to open the discussions and prove your case. But right now, I'm tired of you.

I think my government doesn't understand this "free speech" thing well.
"Free speech" is an absolute thing. Either you're free to say anything -- including things some may consider offensive -- or you're not.
I may disagree with a "liberal" news channel questioning if the Soviet Army should have surrendered Leningrad to the Nazis. I may consider it disgusting. But if the government wants to sue the whole channel for that, I will stand for their right to say disgusting shit I disagree with.
Not to mention that, in this modern era, censorship often works in the exact opposite way. People only become more interested in the forbidden.

This bill expands the Russian anti-gay law to include punishments for publishing information "propagating prioritizing sex before family relations" (or something).

Looks like spammers are already hitting pump.io. Just got followed by a generically-named account with a Russian name that keeps favoriting others' posts and comments and has some sort of a forum link in the bio.
Yeah, I've had a follower who offers to convert any trendy file format to any other for a while too.
Maybe we need a “Report as spam” button which would- Drop the follower;
- Report their account to the admin of their instance;
- Give one poo-ey point to that very instance
a fair bit gets into the firehose..
watch those registration forms! (on any platform where there are signup forms) .. make sure spambots are not signing up!

Come to think of it -- we more and more often hear screams of "universal social networks" such as Facebook losing ground in favor of people using multiple networks designed for different purposes -- Twitter for short messages, Instagram for photos and such.
But it looks like distributed social networks almost all follow the Facebook model. I feel like we're going in a wrong direction :(
I already use pump.io for shorter and/or ephemeral stuff, my blog for longer hopefully longer-term stuff, and Mediagoblin for photos :-)

Why do some keep writing "defiantly" instead of "definitely"? These are two completely different words!
Probably, they just type 'definatly' and follow the first spell-checker suggestion that pops up.

Freeciv's "civ1" ruleset is a bit strange. I was playing for a while, conquering others, then, suddenly, the game announced victory. Turns out, the only remaining opponent was defeated by the pirates.
I don't recall that happening in the original Civ... Sure, the pirates were in the game, and they did conquer cities sometimes, but not to the extent of them defeating three whole civilizations.

The problem with pump.io is similar to the problem with Jabber/XMPP.
There is a load of clients for all imaginable platforms. But they all differ in terms of capabilities. This makes it harder to use the networks and makes users limit themselves to the basic set.

And in the case of pump.io... this is a really young system. Most of the clients already support more stuff than the web UI. Give things time to grow.
