The effects of parity and plane of nutrition on mass during gestation and the post-partum periods... more The effects of parity and plane of nutrition on mass during gestation and the post-partum periods were studied in 36 adult West African Dwarf (WAD) goats assigned to three planes of nutrition for a period of 2 years. There was general mass gain in all the groups during gestation. Mass gain in high supplemented group (A) was significantly superior (P<0.05) to the gain in unsupplemented group (C), but not in medium supplemented group (B). Similarly, mass losses occurred in all groups post-partum. The mass losses were not significantly different between the groups. Mass changes in the does were not influenced by litter types. Dams giving birth to only singleton gained 4.4 ± 0.55 kg during gestation. The corresponding value for twin-bearing does was 6.13 ± 0.80 kg. Pre-partum mass gains were positively correlated with pre-weaning mass losses in all groups. However, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed in groups A and B, but not in group C. Parity had no significant effect within groups A and B, but does (dams) in group A significantly gained more mass (P<0.02) than groups B and C. There was a progressive mass increase with advancing pregnancy in all the groups. Group A does had significantly higher daily mass gain than group C during 1-140 days (P<0.05), 50-140 days (P<0.05) of pregnancy. It was concluded that nutrition and parity significantly affected the mass changes during gestation and the post partum period.

Group A was treated with 2% Aloe vera gel while group B was treated with 3% and Group C the control was treated with distil water. Blood and semen samples were collected for analysis and histology of the testis was done. Spermiogram revealed that as the concentration of the gel increased, the motility and sperm count decreased. Although the decrease in sperm motility was significant (p<0.05), the decrease in the sperm count was not significant (p>0.05) across the groups. Percentage liveability of sperm cells was significantly lower (p<0.05) in treated groups than control. The control group had higher semen volume, this volume was however not significantly different (p>0.05) from other treatments. Morphological studies showed that group B (3% group) had a si...

The effect of age, weight and scrotal circumference on the testicular and epididymal parameters w... more The effect of age, weight and scrotal circumference on the testicular and epididymal parameters was studied in the Red Sokoto bucks. Thirty-six testes from Red Sokoto bucks were used for this study. The animal's age, weight, and scrotal circumference were determined and correlated with testicular weight, testicular diameter, testicular length, epididymal length, gonadal and extra-gonadal sperm motility and viability. All parameters were correlated positively and negatively at various instances of p < 0.01 and p < 0.05. The sperm morphological abnormalities showed that tailless head (primary abnormality), headless tail (secondary abnormality), bent tail (secondary abnormality), curved tail (secondary abnormality), bent mid-piece (tertiary abnormality) and curved mid-piece (secondary abnormality), total sperm abnormalities and total cell count were found to be significant at p < 0.01. It was concluded that the age, weight and scrotal circumference of Red Sokoto buck were positively correlated to its testicular and epididymal parameters and therefore are potentially useful in the evaluation of the breeding soundness of the bucks.

Programmed cell death may be modulated by an intrinsic pathway involving the release of cytochrome C when the mitochondrial membrane permeability transition (MMPTP) pore is opened. Opening of MMPT pore was assayed using the method of Lapidus and Sokolove. The results obtained revealed that there was a dose-dependent and significant increase in the opening of the MMPT pore in rats orally administered the decoction with maximum induction (11-fold increase) at 55mg/100g body weight (bw), although the extent of opening of the pore was reduced at 65mg/100g bw (9-fold increase). An assessment of the blood parameters of animals orally exposed to the decoction showed significant decrease (p<0.05) in lymphocytes and a significant increase (p<0.05) in neutrophils at 55mg/ 100g bw. The rats (n=15) weighing between 150-220g were divided equally into 3 groups; A, B and C. Group A served as control, B received chloroquine at 20mg/kg body weight for 3 days while C received Artesunate at 4mg/kg body weight on the first day followed by 2mg/kg body weight thereafter for six consecutive days. Hematological and selected serum biochemical parameters were assessed. Varying degrees of derangements were noticed in the experimental groups. The haematology findings reveal that there was intravascular haemolysis, leucocytosis with significant (p<0.05) decrease in neutrophils in both groups. The serology reveals an increased serum creatinine level which was significantly (p<0.05) higher in chloroquine treated rats. Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) levels in both groups were elevated. The drugs therefore have varying grades of cytotoxicity to RBC, bone marrow depressing effect, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. It is therefore recommended that these chemical agents despite their long existence in the treatment of malaria should be used with caution as indiscriminate use and/or overdose have deleterious side effects.

All orchidectomies were performed after two weeks of quarantine and performance on the bucks was studied. In the control intact bucks, an ejaculate volume of 0.4AE0.04 ml, sperm concentration of 2.7AE0.2Â10 9 sperm/ml, sperm motility of 68.3AE3.0%, testicular circumference of 9.5AE0.5 cm, testicular weight 31.8AE4.9 g and percentage live sperm of 91.3AE2.5% were recorded. In the hemi-orchidectomized goats, the ejaculate characteristics of left orchidectomy, the sperm motility was signi®cantly (P<0.01) higher than in control bucks. Testicular circumference of left testis orchidectomy did not differ signi®cantly from that of the right testis orchidectomy, while being signi®cantly different (P<0.01) to those of the intact testis. The study showed that in the short term, hemi-orchidectomized bucks can be assessed for the suitability and evaluation of their testes for breeding purposes, using the parameters evaluated above.

The gonadosomatic index of female Wistar rats treated with graded concentration of Av gel was investigated. Seventy two sexually mature female Wistar rats weighing 140 to 255 g and 16 to 20 weeks of age were randomly grouped into four. The group A (control) rats were given distilled water while the treatment groups B, C and D were given 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg of the gel, respectively. Ovaries were collected from six rats randomly picked from each group after one, two and three weeks of gel administration. These were weighed and the gonadosomatic index was calculated. A concentrationdependent decrease (P < 0.05) in the gonadosomatic index of the treated groups which was also significantly different (P < 0.05) from one treatment group to the other as the concentration of gel administration increases were observed after each week of gel administration. It was concluded that the intake of Av gel up to 200 mg/kg for a period up to seven consecutive days causes a decrease in the ovarian mass characterized in the rat, and this may have consequences on the fecundity and fertility rate.
