Although intake of nutritious food is essential for the physical, mental and psychological wellbeing of children, there exists gaps nutrition-related information in Nigeria. The paper examines mothers' access to, and utilisation of, under-two child nutrition information in selected rural communities of Delta State. Findings reveal hygiene (94.1%) and exclusive breastfeeding (80.8%) as the most "always" accessed information, and breastfeeding-related messages constituting a half of all available messages to nursing mothers. Utilisation of child nutrition information is also high but modulated. While 70% of the information is utilised, feeding the child to full satisfaction before stopping (94.0%) is highest and breastfeeding for two years is the least (28.9%) utilised. However, access is incongruous with utilisation. Pearson Correlation Coefficient shows no significant relationship between information access and feeding patterns as the information accounted only for 7.3 percent of the adopted feeding methods. Implementation of child nutrition information is related to mothers' sociodemographic background and sociocultural beliefs, which have implications for child health and development. The paper calls for a more inclusive approach to child nutrition information, education and intervention.

Most cases are considered sporadic, although clinical predictors, such as genetic and immune factors, have been found by studying the different phenotypes. Mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of MD have been described, within which the proinflammatory immune response stands out, in addition, the presence of microbial antigens triggers an inflammatory process mediated by the release of proinflammatory cytokines at different sites within the cochlea, which leads to an imbalance of liquids causing accumulation of endolymph and the corresponding symptoms. It is characterized by greatly affecting the quality of life of patients, which is why diagnosis, stratification, and timely management of the disease are very important. New options are added every day to the existing therapeutic arsenal, together with imaging techniques that they are used with increasing frequency.

Although studies have analyzed the influence of disinformation on voter choices, little is known about the false information that went viral on social media during the 2019 Nigerian presidential elections and its influence on voting decisions. Accordingly, the study identified social media disinformation about Muhammadu Buhari (All Progressives Congress) and Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party), and its influence on voting decisions. Content analysis of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube posts revealed 10 viral pieces of disinformation about the contestants. Although the messages looked authentic because of their attribution, they were tagged false by independent fact checkers and disclaimers. They were also ascribed as false by survey respondents. Despite their presence, the information had little influence on voting...

Careful observation and analyses of the candidates’ photographs, in accordance with the social constructivist perspective, enabled the determination of their conduct and verbal communication in a social context. Findings show that candidates’ facial expression, body language, among others, portrayed mutual accord, cordiality and partnership. The impressions created from these did help to neutralize the perceived threats of violence from both sides of the political divide. In spite of the unpleasant rhetoric by the candidates on several occasions, the photographs portrayed them as friends as the images symbolized unity in diversity. One fact emerged from this study: When texts and rhetoric from political candidates and their supporters came like a flood, photographs were there to raise a standard against it.

A survey of 180 students in selected secondary schools in Ibadan showed that viewing influenced their sexuality knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP). The paper argues that exposure to home movies affect young people’s life aspirations as higher viewership (95.6 percent) corresponds with high negative sexuality response (93.3 percent). Accordingly, the media teach 87 percent of students about girl-friend/boy-friend relationships, expose 82 percent to sexual relationships, arouse 85 percent and encourage premarital sex among 53 percent students. While entertaining, the media provide information that teenagers use to construct their sexuality, having far reaching health implications. Home video content and packaging thus place adolescent lives on a reproductive health disaster. This calls for alternative models of entertainment communication as well as critical censorship o...

It is based on a study of key factors promoting differences in girls' reproductive behaviour across these generations, which linked this change to media exposure and a number of social variables that challenge traditional views of the relationships. The study found alterations in adolescent sexual activities, contraceptive prevalence, voluntary abortion and the fertility. Female age at sexual debut was found to be declining, with 11.3% of adolescent females initiating sex at 11 years relative to 4.1 percent from previous cohorts. This finding in particular reflects the onset of liberal sexual norms, accentuated by ease of entry into consensual unions and trends towards sexual networking. The general findings point to the role of western media, poverty and pressures related to an urbanizing lifestyle on girls' aspirations and reproductive choices. In this way, it contributes to the growing body of work on reproductive change in an era of serious population debate and, therefore, suggests a need for adopting alternative models for explaining reproductive change in sub-Saharan communities.

The process deviated from an issue-based discussion to hate speeches and personalization, hence, people forecasted electoral violence and predicted a more violent outcome than the 2011 Nigerian presidential election crises hatched in Northern Nigeria following the victory of Goodluck Jonathan. Accordingly, a press report by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) stated that the 2015 elections would be a rematch of the 2011 elections between GEJ, a southern Christian and GMB, a northern Muslim (Campbell, 2015).Polarization during the political process is not common to Nigeria but it is a global phenomenon which may result to unintended violent acts. This is implicated in the Nigerian election processes and governance and may breed disunity, enmity and regional cris...

They use different techniques to influence human knowledge, attitude and practice. Through the qualitative approach, the study identified the media and strategies commonly used for HIV/AIDS behaviour change communication in Nigeria. It triangulated unobtrusive observation and in-depth interviews through the viewing of selected broadcast, film and outdoor media in South-West Nigeria. In-depth interviews complemented the data. Results revealed the use of social marketing to enhance acceptance, retention and recall of HIV messages. Repetition, context-specific languages, credible sources and integration of advertisement, drama, news and public service announcements increased information availability, affordability, accessibility and comprehension. While entertainment constituted the most used communication method, messages were anchored on HIV/AIDS prevention. Comparatively, findings showed a drastic decrease of HIV info...

This strategy will make development messages easily accessible and comprehensible by different Nigerian publics, a mechanism for eliminating discrimination and alienation of particular communities from development messages. The paper argues that the converging indigenous, traditional and new media platforms would promote the spread of, exposure and response to development ideas by the Nigerian dichotomized audience as well as influence human knowledge, attitude and behaviour. Integrating media messages would ensure participation of diverse communities in development processes despite people’s socioeconomic and residential background. In summary, the meaning of the message should determine the medium of that message. The paper identifies sociocultural context as a determinant of development communication and describes th...

Constructed through religious, economic, cultural and humaninterest frames, a blissful future encapsulating the hopeful ethos of the city was projected. Reflecting and conscientizing their messianic aspirations, this existentialist paradigm attended to the hopes of the people for better living conditions. The article examines and interprets the sociocultural frames in ‘Ambo-Gbabe’ music video, focusing on context-specific images that reveal the manifesto of Akinwunmi Ambode. The video expressed the political ideas and intentions of the contestant by employing popular, emotional and cultural appeals. A combination of figurative expressions, languages, proverbs, dramaturgy, incantation, rap, and skelewu and shoki dances drew the message closer to the political environment, while the musicology relate...

The study examinedthe phenomenon among University staff and students in Ota, with a view to describing the consumption motivations and patterns of mobile phone use. Survey, focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs)were used to generate data that explained the study problem. While the quantitative approach highlighted the usage patterns, qualitative methodsdescribed the factors that motivate mobile consumption. Findings show that mobile phones are mostly used for oral communication and social networking by adults and youths, respectively. Usage is predicated on the need for information, accessibility, connectivity, interactivity, networking, entertainment and cost efficiency whileconsumption is motivated by economic incentives, social benefits and convenience of use. Because mobilesnavigate sociocultural, economic and spatial boundaries, they providea ready platform for the dissemination of development messages in Nigeria.andpoint to the need for more attention in explaining the behavioural aspects of mobile technology in the developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

This chapter advances the argument that, while human mobility is indeed an integral part of the country’s ancestral migrant meta-narratives, with most of its settlements coming into being due to the actions of migrants, mobility has assumed a different form since independence in 1960.

Although there is a need to safeguard adolescent health, not enough work exists at the interface between female reproductive change and communication. The patterns of communication determine the effectiveness of reproductive knowledge transfer to safeguard girls’ reproductive health at a time of social change. Despite widespread opinion about the taboo nature of sexual and reproductive communication in traditional African settings, its prevalence among mothers and daughters in Ugep, Nigeria, was found to be quite high. The context, form, direction and level of communication reveal that the females engage in reproductive communication in a private environment and through peaceful and friendly strategies. Communication is achieved through sh...

The study was hinged on technological determinism; the data was gathered through survey and in-depth interview; through multistage sampling, questionnaires were administered on 600 youth in Ikeja. Findings show that using the Internet over a long period of time will result to some form of political participation. Thus, the youth who use the Internet for a long time are likely to explore other opportunities (like online political participation) offered by the Internet, therefore, the findings of this study will benefit civil liberties organizations, political parties, government agencies and political communication researchers; and suggests that government and political parties should engage the youth more intelligently on political matters through the Internet and make Internet access more affordable.

The aim of the study is achieved by examining the Information Processing Theory (IPT) and the Niche Media Theory (NMT) to show how their propositions guide the study of media multitasking among Lagos mall users. Therefore, using unobtrusive observations, in-depth interviews, and survey, smartphone use during face-to-face interactions among Lagos mall users was examined based on the proposition of the IPT that humans have limited cognitive resources, and if more resources are directed towards one information processing task, another task will be performed badly. Some researchers believe that this may not always be the case as skills are capable of aiding multitasking. However, guided by the proposition of the NMT, this paper argues that even though skills aid multitasking, there are certain implications for not just the people involved but also the forms of communication used during media multitasking. Findings, to an extent, support IPT's proposition as there was a decline in interaction quality. However, there was an interesting twist to the NMT's proposition on overlap. Mall users who perceived face-toface interactions to be more superior were more likely to replace face-to-face interactions with smartphone communication.

An examination of its operations reveals interaction with economic and social factors for reduction in call costs and management of network fluctuation, limitation and failure. While M 2 P users are active and goal-oriented, usage behaviour is associated with socioeconomic variables, including electronic finance and marketing. Findings indicate that technological advancement has not created imbecility but consumers with the freewill of determining their communication needs and choices. The study is unique in examining this phenomenon and its implications for developing economies.
