A series of glass samples of the tungsten–tellurite system TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3-(4-x) La2O3-xEr2O3, x =... more A series of glass samples of the tungsten–tellurite system TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3-(4-x) La2O3-xEr2O3, x = 0; 0.4; 0.5; 0.7; 1.2; 2; 4 mol%, CEr = 0 - 15 × 1020 cm−3 were synthesized from high-purity oxides in an oxygen flow inside a specialized sealed reactor. In all samples of the series, an extremely low content of hydroxyl groups was achieved (~n × 1016 cm−3, more than 4 orders of magnitude lower than the concentration of erbium ions), which guarantees minimal effects on the luminescence properties of Er3+. The glasses are resistant to crystallization up to 4 mol% Er2O3, and the glass transition temperatures do not depend on the concentration of erbium oxide when introduced by replacing lanthanum oxide. Thin 0.2 mm plates have high transmittance at a level of 20% in the 4.7–5.3 µm range, and the absorption bands of hydroxyl groups at about 2.3, 3, and 4.4 µm, which are typical for ordinary tellurite glass samples, are indistinguishable. This Letter reports the experimental realization, for the first time to our knowledge, of lasing ... more This Letter reports the experimental realization, for the first time to our knowledge, of lasing in an erbium-doped tellurite fiber at 2.72 µm. The key to the successful implementation was the use of advanced technology for obtaining ultra-dry preforms of tellurite glasses, as well as the creation of single-mode Er3+-doped tungsten–tellurite fibers with an almost imperceptible absorption band of hydroxyl groups, with a maximum of ∼3 µm. The linewidth of the output spectrum was as narrow as 1 nm. Our experiments also confirm the possibility of pumping the Er-doped tellurite fiber with a low-cost high efficiency diode laser at 976 nm.

Such short driving pulses contain only a small number of optical cycles and therefore high energy photon bursts are generated due to atom ionization at rapidly increasing field amplitudes. It is obvious that the efficiency of this process becomes dependent on the concrete field distribution over the pulse or, in the other words, on the absolute phase of the optical field.

This technology has made it possible to demonstrate laser generation in the range of about 2.7 μm in erbium-doped tungsten tellurite fibers. In this paper, we present an experimental study of broadband amplification in erbium-doped zinc-tellurite fibers. Zinc-tellurite glasses containing modifying components, such as Na2O, La2O3, Bi2O3, or rare-earth metal oxides, are known to have noticeably lower phonon energy than heavy metal-tellurite systems, namely, tungsten tellurite glasses, which leads to better lasing output. The on-off gain of 30- and 60-cm long zinc-tellurite fibers has been measured in a wide range of diode pump powers. We analyze a new class of soliton solutions for a wave field, which describes propagation of soli... more We analyze a new class of soliton solutions for a wave field, which describes propagation of soliton-like structures of a circularly polarized electromagnetic field comprising a finite number of field-oscillation periods in a transparent nonresonant medium. The considered solutions feature a smooth transition from the soliton solutions of Schrödinger type, which correspond to long pulses with a large number of field oscillations, to extremely short, virtually single-cycle video pulses. We show that such solutions can also be important for linearly polarized laser fields. The structural stability of few-optical-cycle solitons is demonstrated numerically, including the case of their collision. Based on stability analysis and with allowance for the genealogic relation between the obtained wave solitons and the solitons of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we argue that the former solitons can play the same fundamental role in the nonlinear dynamics of the considered wave fields. In particular, it is shown by numerical simulations that the fewoptical-cycle solutions turn out to be the basic elementary components of such a dynamical process as the temporal compression of an initially long pulse to a pulse of very short duration. In this case, the minimum duration of a compressed pulse is determined by soliton structures of about minimal duration.

A simple, robust supercontinuum source based on a tapered germanate fiber is developed as a seed input in the region of 1.5–3 µm. We show that gain by a factor of 5 on one pass can be achieved in the 2.7 µm range by pumping a low-cost, high-efficiency diode laser at 976 nm using high-purity tellurite glass fibers.

However, the most developed single-frequency fiber lasers based on phosphate fibers have the disadvantages of low mechanical strength of both the phosphate fibers themselves and their splices. In this paper we demonstrate a single-frequency laser based on a new composite Yb3+-doped active fiber. The core of this fiber is made of phosphate glass with a high concentration of ytterbium ions and its cladding is made of standard silica glass. This structure ensures a higher splicing strength of the fiber compared to the phosphate fibers and provides high resistance to atmospheric moisture. A Gerchberg–Saxton-like algorithm is used for processing the experimental data. The results obtained by the developed method of optical metrology are confirmed by independent FROG-measurements.

This method can be used for generation of high-quality, high-energy, few-cycle pulses down to a single-cycle duration.

A theoretical analysis demonstrates that, in fibres with anomalous group velocity dispersion decreasing along their length, wavelengths of up to 3.5 mm can be reached, which are unattainable in fibres with a constant core diameter at the same parameters of a 2-mm input signal. The analysis relies on a one-way wave equation that takes into account the combined effect of dispersion, Kerr and Raman nonlinearities, nonlinear dispersion and optical losses and the frequency dependence of the effective fundamental transverse mode size.

In studies of interaction of matter with laser fields of extreme intensity there are two limiting... more In studies of interaction of matter with laser fields of extreme intensity there are two limiting cases of a multi-beam setup maximizing either the electric field or the magnetic field. In this work attention is paid to the optimal configuration of laser beams in the form of an m-dipole wave, which maximizes the magnetic field. We consider in such highly inhomogeneous fields the advantages and specific features of laser-matter interaction, which stem from individual particle trajectories that are strongly affected by gamma photon emission. It is shown that in this field mode qualitatively different scenarios of particle dynamics take place in comparison with the mode that maximizes the electric field. A detailed map of possible regimes of particle motion (ponderomotive trapping, normal radiative trapping, radial and axial anomalous radiative trapping), as well as angular and energy distributions of particles and gamma photons, is obtained in a wide range of laser powers up to 300 PW and reveals signatures of radiation losses experimentally detectable even with subpetawatt lasers.

A master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration composed of a master oscillator, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM), and a one-stage amplifier is designed and employed in the EDFL to serve as an efficient laser system with excellent output performance. To avoid multistage amplifiers, the master oscillator generates 1.5 W, and a Yb-free Er-doped large-mode-area (LMA) active fiber is used for a one-stage power amplifier. There are two benefits to this approach: first, modulation of both pump and seed pulses is used to achieve clear rectangular shaped pulses without amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) growth; and second, there are no power limitations in the amplifier and undesirable 1 µm ASE compared to Er/Yb systems. An analysis is made of instabilities of a homogeneous high-frequency discharge maintained by the ... more An analysis is made of instabilities of a homogeneous high-frequency discharge maintained by the field of a traveling plane electromagnetic wave in a cold gas of electronegative molecules; a low electron collision frequency is assumed. A general dispersion equation is obtained for arbitrary wave perturbations of the field and plasma density. The maximum increments are found, as well as the characteristic scales of the main types of instability, which are large-scale transverse and longitudinal modulation, backscattering, and small-scale stratification in the direction of the electric field vector.
